100 Years Ago – 1917: Because the patrolman on duty failed to include of the main streets of his district in his rounds, inmates of a half-dozen dwelling on East Ninth Street, Chester, had their sleep rudely shattered. Past the witching hour, a burly man attempted to kick in the door of a home, and successful in awakening the sleepers there, refused to go away. Finally, he directed his attention to the house next door. Ejected forcibly, he went across the street, and after ringing a bell for ten minutes, tried to kick this door from its position. The dwelling adjoining this suffered the same treatment. As residents could not find a patrolman, offending stranger, gratifying his kicking tendencies, slowly made his way toward Eddystone, singing aloud in his nocturnal mischievou­sness.

75 Years Ago – 1942: In reaching a decision that the tax rate of the city of Chester for this year is too high and should be reduced from 14.9 to 14 mills, the Delaware County Court criticizes the mayor and city council increasing the rate. Although the court has no power to reduce the rate of taxation, it finds, in an opinion filed at Media today by Judge Albert Dutton MacDade, that the rate for this year should not have been increased beyond the 12 ½ mills used for the last two years.

50 Years Ago – 1967: Boeing’s Vertol Division has on the drawing boards a 94-passenger helicopter which it hopes will boost its entry into the masstransp­ortation field. Even if the helicopter was built, company officials said to would not be in service now because facilities – such as heliports – don’t exist to handle it. But Vertol feels such a helicopter will have a place in nationwide efforts to relieve traffic congestion and plans to make it lucrative enough for use by airlines.

25 Years Ago – 1992: Highlights from Tchaikovsk­y’s enchanting ballet “The Nutcracker” will be presented at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center for four performanc­es.

10 Years Ago – 2007: A homicidal threat found Friday in a Widener University dorm bathroom — forcing the cancellati­on of classes and temporaril­y restrictin­g students — was determined to be unfounded by a team of swift-moving investigat­ors by 4 p.m. The university lifted all safety measures at 7:40 p.m., reopening the main campus and allowing the 57 residents of the evacuated Boettner Hall to return to their rooms.
