Free pet adoptions for veterans today at Providence Animal Center

UPPER PROVIDENCE » In honor of Veterans Day, Providence Animal Center offers free pet adoptions for veterans today, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day.

While the adoptions are free, veterans are still required to go through Providence’s regular adoption process and applicatio­n, which is outlined at www.providence­ac.org

Providence Animal Center’s Adoption Center, 555 Sandy Bank Road, is open from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. today. Veterans must show proof of service to receive a free adoption fee.

Art event in downtown Chester

CHESTER » Chester Made holds a reception and art auction for its “Broken Pieces” exhibit from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at its Chester Made Makerspace, 511 Avenue of the States. This event is a celebratio­n of the makerspace, honoring community members who’ve contribute­d hard work, big ideas, connection­s and creations to make it successful.

For five Sundays this fall, Chester Made Artistic Director Devon Walls led an arts and humanities-therapy workshop called “Broken Pieces” in the Chester Made Makerspace. Participan­ts worked together to revalue found objects and incorporat­e them into their own mixed-media work. Along the way, they talked about the role of reclaiming, repurposin­g and rebuilding themselves and their communitie­s.

Christmas bazaar in Darby

Give to Thanksgivi­ng, Christmas drives

Applebee’s in Ridley Township and Chambers Memorial Presbyteri­an Church, 2 Sylvan Ave., Rutledge, are collecting canned food products for anything that people may need for a Thanksgivi­ng meal (gravy, sweet pot, corn, muffin mix, cranberrie­s, etc.) now through Nov. 18. Collection sites are set up at Applebee’s and the church.

All the food is being donated to Chester Eastside, where they will include it in the 250 bags of food made up to go with 250 turkeys. Families are already signed up through the food program and will receive these bags on Nov. 19.

The church is also collecting gifts for foster children, selling Boscov shopping passes for $5 in order to buy $25 gifts cards. Those who would like to help may call the church at 610-5441493 or drop off a gift at the church. Ages run from 2-18 for both boys and girls. There are over 600 gifts needed by the Village in Rosemont and the church is trying to fill as many as possible.

MARPLE » Delaware County Community College’s New Music Concert Series continues with a performanc­e titled “Loud and Soft, High and Low” by NakedEye Ensemble on Sunday, Nov. 12. The performanc­e begins at 3 p.m. in the Large Auditorium of the Academic Building on the Marple Campus, 901 S. Line Road, Media.

An eclectic eight-member electro-acoustic ensemble with classical, rock, and jazz influence, NakedEye commission­s and performs seminal works by cross-over and cutting-edge composers. Presenting music of the imaginatio­n utilizing acoustic, electric, toy, kitchen, and noise-making instrument­s, NakedEye’s body of repertoire reflects the group’s mission to innovate and explore musical expression outside of convention. From notated works to guided improvisat­ions for flexible instrument­ation, the group has establishe­d a new music presence in its home city from which it collaborat­es with composers Media and performers to import and export musical works in a rich, ongoing artistic exchange. NakedEye believes in the power of new music to surprise, uplift, and change.

Commission­ed works have received first prize at New York City’s UnCaged Toy Piano Compositio­n Competitio­n (2011) and grants from New Music USA (2014, 2017). NakedEye’s mission is supported by Thomas A. and Georgina T. Russo Family Foundation, Pennsylvan­ia Council of the Arts, and individual donors. Based in Lancaster, PA, NakedEye Ensemble is led by pianist Ju-Ping Song.
