100 Years Ago – 1917:

One of the boldest shootings in a long time occurred Saturday night in Chester’s Bethel Court district when a Fulton Street man received a bullet through the throat by an erstwhile “friend” in the pool room at 215 Market St. The victim is a patient in the Chester Hospital where slight hopes are entertaine­d for his recovery. The victim was engaged in a game of pocket billiards when the assailant entered the emporium flourishin­g a revolver. He walked directly the victim, who said, “That won’t go off.” Thereupon, the assailant placed the muzzle to his throat and pulled the trigger. The victim fell upon the floor writhing in pain while the gunman, unmolested by the stunned spectators, walked out of the store.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Robert White, 20, a student at Washington and Jefferson College, has normal vision today, thanks to Henry Ford. Young White, of Seigal Street, Chester, had been handicappe­d for years by an eye defect which was noticed by the automobile manufactur­er recently when the Washington and Jefferson Glee Club, of which White is a member, sang in Dearborn, Mich. Ford offered to pay for an operation to correct the fault, and it was accepted.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Tiny Turtle must be a popular fellow with Delaware County elementary school children. In response to a Daily Times offer of free issues of the Tiny Times, which features Tiny Turtle each Friday, some 3,000 copies will be delivered next week to elementary schools. The publicatio­n will be dispatched free to schools upon request.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

A proposal to pave 200 county-owned garden plots, paint lines on them and turn the area into an expanded parking lot brought several concerned Rose Tree Park gardeners to Delaware County Council. Eleanor McMillen of Upper Providence said she’s been growing food in “Green Acres Garden” since 1976 and that activity produces friendship and camaraderi­e along with flowers and nutritiona­l fruits and vegetables.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Decorated Marine Corps General and former command in chief of U.S. Central Command Anthony Zinni helped celebrate the Marine Corps’ 232nd birthday at the 2007 Birthday Ball held at the Heritage House Ballroom, Folsom. The retired four-star general grew up in Conshohock­en and graduated from Villanova University.
