100 Years Ago – 1917: In a further effort to relieve Chester’s crowded housing conditions, J.P. Eyre Price, in charge of the business of his father, Brigadier General William G. Price, has decided upon the erection of 108 modern dwellings in the Fifth Ward. The improvement will be situated on Baldwin, Glenn and Terrill streets and Alba Johnson Road. These operations, together with the 100 dwellings being erected on the former Fifth Ward Baseball Park, make a total of 354 new homes in that locality. 75 Years Ago – 1942: The liquor license of an Upper Darby restaurant and taproom has been suspended for 15 days by the Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board. The temporary revocation of license applies to the Drexel Food Shop and Luncheonette, Inc., 2333 Marshall Road. Opening of Sharon Hill Elementary Schools following an epidemic of scarlet fever cases which has been scheduled for Monday has been postponed for one week. Two new cases have just been reported.
50 Years Ago – 1967: A safety education campaign sponsored by the Delaware County Daily Times will go into full swing today with publication of the first safety page of a year-long program. The page, which will appear every other
week, will point out “26 Ways to Play It Safe” and details on a high school essay contest on “What Safety Means to Me.”
25 Years Ago – 1992:
Middletown residents and businesses currently served by the Media post office are being asked by township council to approve a chance of mailing address from zip code 19063 to 19037. If 90 percent of about 5,600 postal patrons surveyed reply favorably to a questionnaire they’ve received form the U.S. Postal Service, the township would have its own post office in the Media postal annex on S. Penn Road – and its own postal identity.
10 Years Ago – 2007: A woman accused of passing a bad check to buy one car and then stealing another during a test drive from separate dealerships in Concord has been apprehended. The 39-year-old was charged on a pair of outstanding warrants after her photograph ran in the Daily Times and investigators were tipped to her whereabouts. She is accused of passing a $35,000 counterfeit check when she purchased a one vehicle in May before committing the robbery in June.
