100 Years Ago – 1917:
Thousands of families in this district are without a pound of coal, according to information received by the Delaware County Fuel Commission. There is not a possibility of enough coal being received to tide over the winter. With a cold spell ready to strike shortly, empty bins are reported in all section of Chester and the county.
75 Years Ago – 1942:
Fifty women from all parts of Delaware County met for a luncheon at the Ingleneuk Tea Room to plan the 1942 campaign for the sale of Christmas Seals, sponsored by the Delaware County Tuberculosis and Health Association. Dorothy Waldo Phillips, an ardent worker in the campaign, stressed that the need for this work is greater this year than ever before because of the present war as tuberculosis always increases in war times.
50 Years Ago – 1967:
A peace group plans to conduct today a program on “peaceful alternatives to military service” outside Chester High School. A spokesman for demonstrators who staged a sit-in protest after Monday night’s school board meeting said Tuesday they plan to station a “peace bus” outside the high school to “hand out information” to students. The school board and Schools Superintendent John J. Vaul turned down a request to sponsor a high school assembly on alternatives to military service.
25 Years Ago – 1992:
Tammie Fowler and Margaret Glass will read on Nov. 17 at the Alfred O. DeShong Museum and Cultural Arts Center, 1020 Avenue of the States, Chester. Fowler is the host of the poetry show for Drexel Cable TV. Glass, a Chester housewife and mother, will present her first feature reading. The reading is presented in conjunction with Poets and Prophets.
10 Years Ago – 2007:
More of Philadelphia area paychecks are now being spent at the gasoline pump — double the percentage of income set aside for fuel five years ago, according to a recent study by the Oil Price Information Service. Meanwhile, the median income in the United States has remained flat. In the five-county Philadelphia region — which includes Delaware County — residents spent an average of 2.7 percent of their income on gas costs in 2007, compared to 1.4 percent in 2002, reported AAA Mid-Atlantic. This reflects an estimated monthly fuel cost of about $120 this month compared to about $58 in 2002.
