Azadi Celebration is coming to Upper Darby

- To submit community news, email Colin Ainsworth at delcocommunity@21stcenturymedia.com.

An Azadi Celebration will be held Nov. 26, starting at 4.30 p.m. at St. John’s Indian Orthodox Church, 4400 State Road, Drexel Hill. This celebration of the freedom struggle in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan against British colonialism will include classical dance performances, folk music from both India and African America, and poetry in languages including English, Hindi, Urdu, Bangla and Punjabi. Ron Blunt, president of the Taxi Workers’ Alliance of Philadelphia, as well as Dr. Anthony Monteiro, former Temple professor will be speaking on the significance of the South Asian freedom struggle today.

We hope to engage in dialogue with the community about the history of fighting for justice that South Asian immigrants come from. We also want to emphasize the links between the South Asia and Africa, specially African America, like the ties between Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

Devon Lanes in partnership with Toys for Tots

Devon Lanes will be a local drop off point for donations for the US Maine Corps Toys for Tots program that gives brand new toys to children in need. As a local family owned business, owners Scott and Brett Furman of RE/ MAX Classic along with their sister Pam Kofsky of Elegant Interiors, are supporters of several charitable endeavors during the year.

“Toys for Tots is the newest organization that we want to support,” said Scott Furman. “We love that United States Marine Corps Reserve members collect and distribute toys – all kids deserve a present to open at the holidays and we are planning on making this an annual tradition going forward.”

As of 2016, the Toys for Tots Program and Foundation have collected and distributed more than 512 million toys.

Drop-off bins are located at Devon Lanes near the main counter until Dec. 11. Please make sure your donated toys are new and unwrapped.

Chrysanthemums back at Longwood

EAST MARLBOROUGH » With autumn in full swing, Longwood Garden’s Chrysanthemum Festival is now on through Nov. 19. The four-acre grand Conservatory is full of fall’s quintessential flowers — from the thousands of colorful Chrysanthemum blooms to the one-of-a-kind Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum, the Chrysanthemum Festival showcases the traditional Asian art of cultivating chrysanthemums into grand artistic shapes.

“Longwood’s Chrysanthemum Festival is one of the oldest and grandest in North America,” said Longwood President and CEO Paul B. Redman. “It is the most horticulturally challenging display of the year for our staff to create and is a showcase of their expertise and mastery of growing techniques that are becoming increasingly rare around the world.”

In November, Chrysanthemum Festival reaches peak bloom as vibrant color fills the Conservatory. A highlight of the display is the Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum, a single chrysanthemum plant grown to produce as many perfect blooms as possible. This year, the amazing plant features 1,443 uniform blooms and measures at an impressive 12 feet wide and nearly eight feet tall. The Thousand Bloom is currently on display.

On Nov. 11 from 1–4 p.m., Longwood’s horticulture staff is on hand in the Conservatory to share with guests about how they create many of the spectacular chrysanthemum forms on display, often beginning the growing process many months to more than a year in advance of the display opening. In addition, to honor the heritage and continued importance of the chrysanthemum to Asian culture, the Peter Tang Chinese Ensemble performs traditional Chinese music from 2–5 p.m. in the Conservatory.
