-

DURHAM, N.C. » Wendell Carter Jr. had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 1 Duke beat Southern 78-61 on Friday night.

Marvin Bagley III added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Grayson Allen finished with 10 points for the Blue Devils (4-0), who were coming off a victory over No. 2 Michigan State three nights earlier.

Duke showed several classic symptoms of a letdown, finishing with a season-high 15 turnovers, shooting just 4 of 20 from 3-point range and for a while struggling to keep Southern (0-4) off the offensive glass before regrouping to finish with a 51-34 rebounding advantage.

Trevon Duval also had 10 points for Duke, which never led by fewer than 10 points in the second half, but also had trouble putting Southern away, not pushing its lead into the 20s until the final 5 minutes. (4) KANSAS 98, SOUTH DAKOTA ST. 64» Svi Mykhailiuk scored a careerhigh 27 points and Lagerald Vick finished with 22 for Kansas (3-0). Green scored 10 of the Wildcats’ next 12 points to cut the lead to 2320, and Hamidou Diallo and Wenyen Gabriel combined for 11 of the next 16 as Kentucky outscored ETSU 28-12 over the final 10:05 for a 36-30 halftime lead. (16) TEXAS A&M 84, UC SANTA BARBARA 65 » DJ Hogg scored 19 of his 24 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half and Texas A&M (20) won its home opener. (23) UCLA 96, SOUTH CAROLINA ST. 68» Jaylen Hands scored 22 points to lead three freshmen in double figures for UCLA (3-0), which notched its third straight win despite a depleted roster.

UCLA is playing with an eightman roster since freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley were indefinitely suspended on Wednesday after confessing to shoplifting during the team’s season-opening trip to China last week.
