100 Years Ago – 1917: Among the improvemen­ts now under way in Eddystone are those being made to Thirteenth Street west of Saville Avenue. Sidewalks are being laid here, and the street si being greatly improved.

75 Years Ago – 1942: Most of Chester stores will be open every night until Christmas, starting Dec. 7. This was decided at a lengthy meeting of the Chester business Men’s Associatio­n in the Chester Club at noon today after considerab­le discussion. The hours will be from 10a.m.-9p.m. every day including Friday and Saturday.

50 Years Ago – 1967: A 37-yearold Middletown housewife who was arrested Nov. 13during a peace protest pleaded guilty at a hearing this morning in Chester on disorderly conduct charges. Magistrate Phil C. Puzzancher­a fined the woman, a mother of four, $50plus $9costs for her refusal to leave the school district’s administra­tion building. The woman and 19other protesters were asked to leave the building after they staged a sit-in when board President Clarence Roberts refused to allow public discussion at the end the meeting.

25 Years Ago – 1992: Ridley Township commission­ers approved resolution­s asking the state Department of Transporta­tion to consider installing left-turn arrows at two major intersecti­ons. The signals would control traffic from both directions of Fairview Road at the intersecti­on of MacDade Boulevard. Left-turn signals have been in place both east and west bound on MacDade at Fairview for several years. Another left-turn will be requested from east bound MacDade onto Bullens Lane. There is already a left turn arrow west bound at this intersecti­on.

10 Years Ago – 2007: Less than 10miles northeast of the Salem Nuclear Power Plant sits the city of Chester, population 36,801. Located on the Delaware River, Chester is flanked on either side by oil refineries and a marine terminal. It is home to a number of commercial riverfront enterprise­s, and sits at the end of Philadelph­ia Internatio­nal Airport Runway 27. A target for terrorists? Chester police aren’t taking any chances. “We want to be proactive, considerin­g we are on the waterway with the fourth-largest petroleum port nearby,” said Chester Police Capt. Joseph Bail. “We are also close to a facility similar to Three Mile Island. That’s a concern, not just a terrorist concern, but also in an emergencyr­esponse situation.”
