Drexel falls in two overtimes to Drake

LYNCHBURG, VA. » De’Antae McMurray scored 23 points, including the winning jumper with 15 seconds left, Drexel turned the ball over on its final two possession­s and Drake held on for a 90-88 win in double overtime in the third place game of the relocated Paradise Jam on Sunday.

Tramaine Isabell, who scored 32 for Drexel, was called for traveling after McMurray’s basket. McMurray then missed a pair of free throws with five seconds left, but he made up for it with a steal before the Dragons got off a final shot.

McMurray had a 3-point play in the middle of a 7-0 run that put the Bulldogs up 88-85 with 47 seconds left. But Sammy Mojica, who opened the second overtime with a 3, hit one at 41 seconds to tie the game.

Nick McGlynn had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Graham Wood had 13 points as six players scored in double figures for Drake (3-1).

Kurk Lee had 21 points for Drexel (23) and Austin Williams had 14 rebounds.

The tournament was moved from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands to the Vines Center in Lynchburg due to damage from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Nik Popovic had 18 points for the Eagles. Ky Bowman added 13 points with seven assists and Jordan Chatman 10. All five Boston College starters scored in double digits for the second straight game. Boston College outrebound La Salle 48-30.

B.J. Johnson led the Explorers with 27 points, while Pookie Powell added 16. No other player scored more than six points.

The Eagles closed the first half on a 10-0 run, with Bowman hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer, to make it 30-22. The Explorers led 17-13 with 10:42 left, but finished the half making just 1 of their last 14 shots.

“It was a big momentum change,” La Salle coach Dr. John Giannini said. “The last two minutes of that 10-0 run was a complete momentum change.”

In the second half, La Salle cut the lead to 40-34 on Johnnie Shuler’s 3-pointers inside 13 minutes, but the Eagles answered with a 10-3 run to create some breathing room.

BC shot 56 percent in the second half, and 48 percent for the game. La Salle finished at 34 percent shooting overall.

“We struggled the whole game offensivel­y,” Giannini said. I thought we played hard enough on defense the first 18 minutes that we had a chance to win the game, and things changed after that. . We really couldn’t do anything well the final 22 minutes of the game.”
