- Harry Chaykun In the Community Daily Times

Springton Lake Middle School’s seventh-grade girls volleyball team recently defeated Valley Forge Middle School, 2-1, to complete an undefeated season.

The Spartans finished with a 14-0 record, including eight wins by a score of 2-0.

“The girls worked hard all season,” coach Megan Snyder said. “They consistently demonstrated sportsmanlike qualities. The biggest victories were over Northley and Garnet Valley, who always have been Springton’s most difficult opponents.

“This group of players has shown advanced skills that are typically reserved for a highschool level team. They are to be congratulated for a very successful season.”

Among the members of the team are Makayla Kane, Melodie Campbell, Quin Zilch, Kelly McDonnell, Veronica Master, Mary Kate Cosgrove, Lauren Kurcon, Chloe Breeze, Ava Kearney, Selena Psaris, Liz Kurcon, Fiona O’Loughlin, Ciara Bradley, and Emma Curran.

The Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum, located at 301 Iven Avenue in Radnor, is featuring one of the cards from its newest collection of top county sports figures each week on the museum’s website at www.sportslegendsofdelawarecounty.com.

The featured card this week is of former Villanova University women’s cross country and track and field coach Marty Stern, a graduate of Upper Darby High and West Chester University who began his coaching career at Interboro.

Stern also coached at Malvern Prep, St. James, Central Bucks East and Central Bucks West before becoming head coach at Villanova in 1984. His cross country teams won five NCAA championships, and he coached 21 NCAA individual champions, 12 worldrecord holders, and 145 All-Americans. Under his guidance, the Wildcats captured 17 Championship of America titles at the Penn Relays.

In 2016, he was inducted into the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

The Sports Legends Museum is continuing its drive to raise funds for a statue of Radnor graduate Emlen Tunnell, a World War II hero as a member of the United States Coast Guard and the first African-American elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The statue fundraising committee plans to have the dedication ceremony in June 2018.

Museum curator Jim Vankoski recently was notified that one of the 19 Coast Guard cutters that will be commissioned in the near future will be named after Tunnell.
