100 Years Ago – 1917:

Sparks from an old-fashioned fireplace, fanned by a high wind, destroyed a three-story dwelling at the plant of the Essington Shipbuildi­ng Co. yesterday afternoon. So fierce were the flames that it was feared the government aviation schools as well as a large fleet of yachts would fall prey to the fire. The destroyed building was of brick constructi­on and some years ago was used as the officers’ quarters of the Lazaretto Quarantine station.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Work will be started on the eastern leg of the Texas to Philadelph­ia pipeline within two weeks, Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes announced. He said contractor­s have finished the first portion of the pipeline from Longview, Texas, to Norris City, Ill., and the project in now 85 percent completed. When it is completed, the pipeline will carry 300,000 barrels of crude oil daily from Texas to the eastern coastline.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

A 21-year-old Chester man was arrested on charges of burglary and larceny Friday night in the theft of 18 rings, two cameras and a tire from three store display windows in the downtown business district. The suspect was apprehende­d while sitting in a car at Sixth Street and Edgmont Avenue after a police informatio­n implicated him in a Friday morning theft at Warwick’s Jewelry Store, 815 Edgmont Ave.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Several members of the Middletown business community say they’re against a plan to replace their present Media 19063 postal address with a new Middletown Township 19037 Zip code. Township council says the change would provide more efficient mail service and eliminate confusion. They’re asking residents and the business community to approve the plan. But Dick Wolff of Wolff’s Apple House and Paul and Peg Linvill of Linvilla Orchards objected to the proposed change.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Students at Academy Park High School will be getting a new incentive to do well this year: Cold, hard cash. Top achievers in four different categories will be receiving a no-strings-attached check for $250, courtesy of the Challenge Program Inc. The program, founded by Johnstown entreprene­ur Daniel Perkins, is meant to link students to the business community and encourage them to practice valuable work habits.
