Visit Ridley Dec. 6 for ancient Egyptian textiles presentati­on

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP » Ridley Township Library, 100 E. MacDade Blvd., Folsom, welcomes back Stephen Phillips, Ph.D., from the University of Pennsylvan­ia Museum of Archaeolog­y and Anthropolo­gy at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, for “Textiles in Ancient Egypt.” The ancient Egyptians were renowned master weavers, even in their own time. Large quantities of linen were required for things people can still relate to, such as clothing and household uses, as well as for things associated with ancient Egypt specifical­ly, such as cloth for use as mummy wrappings Find out what the ancient Egyptians used to make cloth, how they made it, and how it was used.

The lecture brings ancient Egyptian textiles to life, including images from 3,500 year-old tombs, of royal mummy wrappings (and unwrapping), the world’s oldest dresses, as well as some of the world’s oldest tunics (the “t-shirt of ancient times”). Phillips is the Curatorial Research Coordinato­r in the Egyptian Section of the Penn Museum. He has presented many popular programs on ancient Egypt at the library. Kids can learn to wash their hands and stay healthy this holiday season at a “Make Your Own Soap” program at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. The library welcomes the American Swedish Historical Museum for “Swedish For All Seasons” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14. Explore the country of Sweden, the “land of the midnight sun.” Find out how the changing seasons affect Swedish life while looking at beautiful photograph­s, dressing up in traditiona­l costumes and creating a Dala horse craft — an icon of Swedish culture. The hands-on program transports children across the world, without ever leaving the library.

The library holds a Teen Craft Night for ages 13-17 at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12. Come and make Puffy Paint bracelets or window clings to give as gifts to family or friends.

Authors come inter Furness

NETHER PROVIDENCE » Helen Kate Furness Free Library, 100 N. Providence Road, Wallingfor­d, welcomes two authors for talks in December. Annabel Annuo Liu visits the library at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, to discuss her third memoir, “When Chopsticks Meet Apple Pie: Cross-cultural Musings on Life, Family and Food.” Born in Shanghai, China, Liu is a bilingual writer of memoir, literary essays, short stories and a novel in Chinese.

David Komarnicki is at the library at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6. His book “Five Stars in the Window: Growing up during World War Two” is about his life in Chester as one of ten siblings. The five stars represent four of his seven brothers and the husband of one of his two sisters.

Yeadon celebrates 80 years
