CHESTER » Based on evidence recovered from the scene where a 50-year-old city woman was shot as she was driving in the area of 12th Street and Highland Avenue Monday night, police suspect as many as three individuals shot nine times at the moving vehicle.

The woman, who was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, suffered what Police Chief James Nolan IV described Tuesday as a non-life-threatening injury to her lower back.

“It’s hard to get into the minds of people doing these things … they specifically shot at this car,” Nolan said. “I can’t tell you a reason yet.”

According to Nolan, the gunfire erupted about 9:47 p.m. The shots were fired from a front angle, “the 11 o’clock position,” he said. The car was moving when she was shot in the lower left side of her back.

“The bullet either went through the driver’s door, or the seat,” he said. “The car was hit nine times.”

The woman was driving a 1997 Honda Accord, registered to her daughter. She had just dropped off an individual and was alone in the vehicle when she was shot, according to Nolan.

Despite her wound, “she drove to Ninth and Highland and called police,” he said. “She wanted to get out of the line of fire.”

Police have no suspects or motive in the shooting.

As the investigation continues, anyone with information is asked to contact city detectives at 610-447-8433 or 911.
