Milestone victory for Haverford’s Morgan

Chalk up another milestone for Haverford College women’s basketball coach Bobbi Morgan.

Morgan picked up win No. 200 of her collegiate coaching career as the Fords rolled over Bryn Mawr, 74-33, at Gooding Arena Tuesday night.

With the win, Morgan is 200-142 at the collegiate level. She is the winningest coach in Haverford history with a 134-101 record in 10 seasons. Before that Morgan was 66-41 in four years at Cabrini. And that was after she put together a 326-139 record in 17 seasons as the head coach at Notre Dame and then her alma mater, Haverford High.

Overall, Morgan is 526281 in 31 seasons as a head coach.

Center Samantha Wetzel scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to pace the Fords (5-0, 2-0 Centennial Conference). Forward Megan Furch added 12 points and seven boards, and Macy Goldbach (Garnet Valley) contribute­d 11 points.

Halena Martin led Bryn Mawr (0-4, 0-2) with 16 points.

In other women’s action: MUHLENBERG 77, SWARTHMORE 36 » Chelsea Gary paced the Mules (5-0, 2-0 Centennial) with a gamehigh 21 points. Muhlenberg used an 11-0 run in the first quarter to break the game open.

The Mules received big performanc­es from a pair of local products. Cardinal O’Hara grad Christina Manning finished with 10 points, four rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes. Carley Hamilton of Marple Newtown had four points, a team-high nine boards and two steals in 21 minutes.

Audra Woodside and Isabelle Ewart led Swarthmore (1-4, 0-2) with nine points each.

Men’s Basketball

James Fisher, Terrence Brown and Ameer Staggs combined for 59 points to help Penn State-Brandywine rally from an early seven-point deficit to beat Penn State-Schuylkill, 9887, in the PSUAC opener for both teams.

Fisher (Upper Darby) scored 14 of his teamhigh 25 points in the first half to erase a 10-3 deficit and stake Brandywine (3-2, 1-0) to a 47-36 lead. Brown added 19 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Staggs (Ridley) finished with 15 points and 10 boards, and hit a jumper to ignite a 16-2 run in the first half that gave Brandywine a 43-28. Schuylkill never got closer than nine points. ELIZABETHT­OWN 75, HAVERFORD 72 » Connor Moffatt hit a layup with 33 seconds left to break a 72all deadlock and give the Blue Jays (1-3) their first win of the season.

Haverford squandered a 23-point lead in the second half to suffer its second straight loss. The Blue Jays fought back from a 57-34 deficit with 14:08 to play in the game to go ahead, 6665, on a pair of Moffatt free throws with 3:44 remaining. It was back-and-forth from there until Moffatt put the Blue Jays up for good with his layup.

Moffatt paced Elizabetht­own with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Jonathan Lang of Swarthmore led all scorers with 24 points. Kahlil Garnes chipped in with 14 points and Joe Schibelli added 12.
