100 Years Ago – 1917: Editors of Times: I read an account last week where Ban Johnson, President of the American League, was supposed to have said that baseball players should be exempt from military service. I hope the gentleman did not say or does not think that baseball players should be exempt from military duty. And further, I think the government should stop professional baseball during war. Yours very respectfully, Father of a Soldier, Chester.

75 Years Ago – 1942: A 26-year-old Russian-born member of the Hedgerow Theatre group was sentenced to two years in prison for refusing to be inducted into the Army. Although the 6-foot youth’s forebears served in the Army and Navy of the czar, the man claimed to be a “conscientious objector.” Three other Hedgerow Theatre players have been given 4-H classifications as “conscientious objectors.”

50 Years Ago – 1967: Two Chester High School students have been arrested on charges of narcotics law violations, police said today. Capt. Timothy Gill said the police uncovered “the first major narcotics incident involving Chester High School students.”

25 Years Ago – 1992: When the economy sours, the business picture gets sweet for A to Z Surplus, a firm that specializing in buying and selling industrial shelving, pallet racks and other material handling equipment. “With all the bankruptcies that have occurred over the past few years, there’s no question that it helped our business,” said Jim Badolato, a partner in A to Z. “We’ve grown 20 to 25 percent over the last two years,” said Mike O’Connor, president of the company. Today, five years after its founding, the company counts 15 employees on its payroll and two years ago moved in a sprawling 50,000 square-foot warehouse on Second Street in Chester.

10 Years Ago – 2007: A junior at Upper Darby High School was arrested after allegedly selling marijuana to other students. “He was dealing drugs right near the high school,” Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said. The youth was searched and police confiscated a packet of suspected marijuana from his sweatshirt pocket and $18 from his pants pocket. During processing at the police station, 18 baggies containing suspected marijuana and four small jars of a similar substance were confiscated from the teen’s crotch area. “All that stuff indicates drug trafficking,” Chitwood said.
