SE Delco board welcomes two, loses one at reorg meeting
FOLCROFT » The Southeast Delco School Board added two new board members during its reorganization meeting Monday evening while simultaneously approving the resignation of another.
Clifford Wilson and Cynthia Woodfolk were sworn in as members of the board following their victories in last month’s municipal elections, joining reelected members Dorothy Gallagher, Sheree Monroe and Racquel Irons. Wilson and Woodfolk replace Tanya Cavalieri and Edward McBride.
Their first orders of business were electing the president and vice president of the board, positions Theresa Harris-Johnson and Tammi Forbes, respectively, won. Forbes was unanimously selected for the position while Harris-Johnson did not earns yes votes from newly-installed director Wilson and his daughter, also a school director, Sharon Wilson.
The board also voted by a 7-1 vote to approve the resignation of Donald Young who submitted his letter of resignation to board secretary Vanessa Scott on Thursday evening after a meeting to rescind the contract of Superintendent Stephen Butz.
“I cannot be part of a group who does not keep their word and would do such a terrible thing to a wonderful superintendent like Dr. Stephen Butz, who not only is of such high moral character but in plain words, the best we have ever had in the position of superintendent,” read a portion of his letter. “I cannot allow myself to take part in such an un Christian-like act.”
Young was strongly against rescinding the five-year contract extension the board had unanimously approved on Nov. 15.
Harris-Johnson said during the meeting there is a lot of work to be done in the district and for the students with the new board. She chose not to comment after the meeting about Young’s resignation.
