UPPER DARBY » The iconic holiday tradition of putting the “elf on the shelf” reached new heights in the Upper Darby School District on Monday morning.

Westbrook Park Elementary School Principal Marc Comfort donned an elf costume and sat on a corner roof of the school to greet students as they started the last week of classes before winter break.

Comfort said he saw someone do a similar high-rise stunt last year so he couldn’t claim the idea as his own. After buying an elf costume from Amazon and getting a ladder, he was ready to take the elf from the shelf to the top of the school.

“For me it was a really positive way to start the school day and that’s how it was for kids,” said Comfort. “If they’re talking about fun things like this, that’s the best thing.”

He added, “School should be fun … a place kids love to come to.”

In his second year as principal of Westbrook, Comfort said his goal is to keep things fun.

“The complete idea is that this will get kids really excited and come here the next couple of days before the break and get our parents excited and build up the good will of the school,” he said.

For the remainder of the week he will be elfing at various locations inside and outside the school at the start of the day. He will even make a special appearance for the afternoon kindergarten students arriving at the school at some point this week.
