75 Years Ago – 1942:

War industries hummed throughout Delaware County today despite a maze of conflictin­g orders on the gasoline situation. Officials at several of the larger plants said that “practicall­y full crews” had arrived for duty on early shifts, although many had left their cars at home in favor of bus or rail travel. Parking lots around plants were not so crowded as usual, and police along Chester Pike estimated that traffic was down onethird.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Delaware County’s three state senators – Clarence D. Bell, R-9 of Upland, Clyde R. Dengler, R-26 of Upper Darby, and Lawrence R. Coughlin, R-17 of Lower Merion – voted with the majority today in boosting the state sales tax from 5 percent to 6 percent. The senators joined with the county’s 10 representa­tives who had voted Friday for the measure. A group of Chester business and citizens organizati­on had urged the senators and Gov. Raymond P. Shafer last night to defeat the measure.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

An 18-year-old Chester High School student has been charged with arson and other offenses for allegedly starting Thursday’s fire in a high school storage room that caused the evacuation of the building. The Chester Township resident was arraigned in Chester Regional Court and was held without bail at Delaware County Prison until a Dec. 28 preliminar­y hearing. “We had a witness,” said Chester Detective Robert Blythe. “We brought the kid in, and he gave a statement.”

10 Years Ago – 2007:

The movers, shakers and kingmakers of Delaware County packed the county council meeting room to bid a fond au-revoir to council members Andy Reilly, Mary Alice Brennan and Michael Puppio. Mostly GOP big-wigs and almost half a dozen county judges lined up to praise the three and especially to thank Reilly for his work in the county. Reilly will be resigning from his $57,880 job as chairman to devote himself to his law practice, he said.
