Swarthmore notches a statement win at Middlebury

On the road against the No. 4 ranked team in the nation, Swarthmore made a statement that maybe it should be rising in the polls soon.

The Garnet led by as many as 18 points in a 91-75 handling of Middlebury, the program’s first win over a nationally ranked opponent.

Cam Wiley led the parade with 22 points and five assists. Zac O’Dell paired 19 points with 14 rebounds; he and Nate Shafer (12 points, eight rebounds, five blocks) contribute­d to 52 points in the paint for Swarthmore (10-1), which entered ranked No. 12 in the latest D3hoops.com poll.

Cacok finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds for the Seahawks (4-10, 1-1 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n), while Jaylen Fornes added a career-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Jeffrey Gary scored 11 and Marcus Bryan chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds for UNC Wilmington, which won the battle of the boards 43-24.

Kurk Lee led Dragons (6-9, 0-2) 22 points, while Harper scored 21.

Women’s Basketball

Butler shot lights-out in the second half to turn a one-point game at halftime into a rout, 76-53, over No. 21 ranked Villanova.

The Bulldogs shot 15for-25 (60 percent) from the field in the second half while the Wildcats were just 9-for-26 (34.6 percent), including a measly 1-for-14 from 3-point land after the break and 4-for-27 for the game. Butler held a 27-11 advantage in the third quarter.

Alex Louin led Villanova with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jannah Tucker added 10 points, and Megan Quinn (Episcopal Academy) chipped in nine points for Villanova (11-2, 1-2 Big East).

Tori Shickel paced Butler (9-5, 1-1) with 26 points, six assists and seven rebounds, one of four Butler players in double figures.
