Work on fundamentals, benefit CAADC at MLK Day Hoops from the Heart clinics
The annual Martin Luther King Day “Hoops From the Heart,” benefitting Community Action Agency of Delaware County, is set for 9 a.m.noon Monday, Jan. 15, at four college campuses across Delaware County. Basketball players across the county drive to the hoop on MLK Day to raise funds and food donations for CAADC, the county’s anti-poverty agency that helps families and individuals to move toward selfsufficiency. Since the the Hoops from the Heart initiative was started in 2002, it has raised over $100,000 for CAADC programs.
The four basketball clinics — held at Cabrini College in Radnor, Haverford College in Haverford, Neumann University in Aston, and Widener University in Chester — are open to boys and girls in grades one through eight and cover all aspects of fundamental play. The athletic staff at each school will conduct the clinics.
Cost for the clinic ranges from $20-$30, depending on which school is hosting. The athletic staff at each school conducts the clinic. Each player who preregisters gets a complimentary T-shirt.
Each athlete is asked to donate a non-perishable food item that will go to the Life Center of Eastern Delaware County, one of CAADC’s emergency housing programs. The Life Center is located at 63rd and Market streets, Upper Darby, and houses 50 homeless individuals and serves over 150 residents each year. The Life Center also operates a feeding program that serves 200250 people daily.

Vets help vets at Jan. 19 social
MEDIA » MIL-TEAMUSA hosts Warrior Night at the Media VFW Post 3460, 11 Hilltop Road, at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 for active, reserve and ROTC service members. What began as an act of kindness has turned into an upcoming fun, social event solely for the military, in hopes of helping even more of their own. The night features a buffet by Fellini Café, music, karaoke, a pool table and shuffle board, with a cash bar for drinks.
For every $30 ticket sold, a MIL-TEAMUSA care package will be sent to a service member. The organization has sent thousands since its 2014 inception.
“I was in the service and you’d get mail call, you’d get letters and you’d get gift packages,” said founder John Houldin, a Marine who served in Somalia during Blackhawk Down. “Not a lot of your fellow service members got gift packages or letters. Sometimes, weeks after weeks, months after months, you kind of felt guilty getting a letter or gift package.”
Some of them quietly took care of each other. “A few of us would actually whatever we got in a big package from our family and good friends, we would mail them to our friends anonymously,” Houldin said. Years later, he didn’t forget, setting up MIL-TEAMUSA where individuals can buy gift packages for particular service members or have one sent to one who needs it. People can pick their own items from shirts to climbing gear and have that
sent. In every package, Houldin includes a package of Pepperidge Farm cookies, just as his mom, Linda, did for him.
“Imagine being stressed, imagine being away from family and friends and being in a different country, just to get a letter really uplifts the spirits – even for a moment, for a couple of days,” Houldin said. “To get a gift package with stuff in it, it’s a big ‘Wow!’ for them.”
Houdlin is hoping to have military members have a fun, relaxing time at the Warrior Night social while being able to send out more boxes, here in the United States and overseas.
“The hope is that we can’t forget 24 hours a day, seven days a week — we’ve got men and women in service standing watch,” Houldin said. “For them, after three days of being up on duty to get a care package is a pretty cool thing.”
Tickets for Warrior Night must be purchased in advance at www.milteamusa. com by Jan. 12. No tickets are sold at the door. Tickets can be purchased in advance by civilians for military members. All proceeds go directly to sending care packages to troops.
