McMahon’s late 3-pointer does the trick for Widener

Ryan McMahon came up big, again, to give Widener a huge win on the road to start 2018.

McMahon hit a 3-pointer with one second left to lift the Pride to an 81-78 triumph over Catholic University Wednesday.

Widener (7-5) held for the last shot after Jay Howard hit the back end of a two-shot foul to tie game at 78 with 28 seconds left.

Sardayah Sambo found McMahon for the winner. Sambo also had an assist on Sam Smith’s 3-pointer that gave the Pride a 78-77 lead with 43 seconds remaining.

Tyler Drews scored 14 points to pace Widener to its fourth straight win. Smith added 15 points, and Sambo pitched in 11. EASTERN 78, DESALES 67 » Antonio Chapman poured in 22 points to pace Eastern in its MAC Freedom opener.

Austin James contribute­d 15 points. Victor Pena had another double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Austin Duncan chipped in 12 points. CABRINI 89, CENTENARY 66 » Tyheim Monroe posted 28 points and pulled down 28 rebounds, one shy of the school record, to help the Cavaliers (8-2, 3-1 CSAC) get the new year off to a good start.

Keith Blassingam­e tallied 26 points, and Anthony WrightDown­ing added 10 for the Cavs. HAVERFORD 93, PSU-BRANDYWINE 80 » Jonathan Lang collected 23 points and four steals off the bench to lead the Fords. Joe Scibelli added 12 points off the bench, while Jesse Turkson chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

James Fisher (Upper Darby) tied Lang for game-high honors for Brandywine. Donte Winfield added 17 points. CHEYNEY 71, CLARION 65 » Jeff Lewis led a balanced attack with 15 points to help the Wolves pick up their second win of the season. Cliff St. Juste (12 points), Olin Ugo (12) and Kyle Parker (11) also scored double figures for Cheyney. NEUMANN 95, IMMACULATA 68 » Billy Cassidy (Primos native) led five Neumann players in double figures with 18 points. Raquan Brown-Johnson added 17 points, Tyaire Hudson 14, Gemil Holbrook 11 and Aaron Johnson-Chavis 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Knights (8-2, 3-1 CSAC).

Women’s Basketball

Yasmine Dorrielan scored the final three points of the game to give Cheyney its second win in three games with a 63-60 comefrom-behind victory over Clarion.

Dorrielan hit a layup off a pass from Marlon Herring with 1:09 to play to put the Wolves (3-9) up, 61-60. Dorrielan then followed up a Jamyra Maye with 28 seconds left to seal the victory. Maye led the way with 15 points. Takayla Ellis added 14 points and Dorrielan 10. CABRINI 78, ELIZABETHT­OWN 77 » Meghan Matthews hit a layup with 25 seconds left in overtime, off a pass from Cassidy Gallagher, to help the Cavaliers (7-2) extend their winning streak to six games.

The duo teamed up to send the game into OT when Gallagher fed Matthews for the tying layup with 34 seconds remaining in regulation. Matthews led all scorers with 23 points while Gallagher finished with eight points and five assists. NEUMANN 69, IMMACULATA 55 » Lauren Legler tallied 17 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to keep the Knights (8-4, 3-0) undefeated in the CSAC. Nafisa Saunders chipped in with 18 points and seven rebounds. WIDENER 74, PSU-BRANDYWINE 38 » Allison Gallagher and Tatiana Pleasant combined for 23 points as the Pride (7-5) extended its winning streak to three games. Gallaher led the way with 13 points. Pleasant had 10 for Widener, had seven players score at least eight points.

Brandi James (Interboro) topped PSU-Brandywine with 11 points. GEORGE MASON 69, LA SALLE 56 » Amy Griffin had 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in 40 minutes for the Explorers (5-9, 0-2 Atlantic 10). SAINT JOSEPH’S 70, ST. BONAVENTUR­E 64 » Double-doubles from Amanda Fioravanti (16 points, 13 rebounds) and Chelsea Woods (14 points, 11 rebounds) helped the Hawks (7-7, 2-0 A-10) win their second straight game. DESALES 76, EASTERN 68 » The visiting Bulldogs scored 28 points in the second quarter to erase a 2813 deficit and take a 41-33 lead into the locker room at halftime in the MAC Freedom opener for both teams.

Amanda Riiff poured in a game-high 23 points for the Eagles (3-8, 0-1).
