Other Times
100 Years Ago – 1918:
Speeches that rang true of a highly complimentary character for Judge William B. Broomall, who was elected to succeed himself on the bench in November: Boosting state Sen. William C. Sproul for governor, with high testimonials as to his fitness for the office; and no annexation of Philadelphia to Delaware County, were the high points in the addresses made last night at a banquet and reception given in honor of Broomall at Bookbinder’s in Philadelphia.
75 Years Ago – 1943:
Due to a gap in the Chester Times Archives, “75 Years Ago” is unavailable. It will return Jan. 12.
50 Years Ago – 1968:
Judge John V. Diggins severely criticized the owner of an Upper Darby apartment complex and ruled in favor of six tenants – “senior citizens” all – in a civil suit. Diggins said the owner “skirted deliberately on the periphery of technical legal fraud if not a transgression thereof.” He rule the tenants, who had signed leases under a Senior Citizens Rental Security Plan that said their rents would not be raised, could not be charged higher rentals. He also ordered the owner of the complex, located on Providence Road in Secane, to repay any rents received from tenants in excess of their original rentals under
the plan. 25 Years Ago – 1993:
The Rev. Thaddeus Kirkland armed himself for the war on vice and vagrancy with a bottle of pancake syrup. Young men had taken to hanging out on the steps of the former Lloyd Athletic Club building in the 1000 block of West Seventh Street in Chester, rolling dice and littering the lawn with empty quart bottles of Old English 800 malt liquor. “I poured syrup on the steps,” Kirkland said. “Dice don’t roll too well in syrup.” Kirkland is anxious to employ the more sophisticated tools he will have at his disposal in the war and vice and other social ills after he is sworn in at noon today to a two-year term as the state representative from the 159th Legislative District.
10 Years Ago – 2008:
