Archmere’s DiGregorio honored in Delaware
Archmere Academy quarterback Joe DiGregorio has been named co-winner of the 2017 Michael DeLucia Sportsmanship Award, which is presented annually to a Delaware high school senior football player.
DiGregorio, a West Chester resident, shared the award with St. Mark’s High offensive lineman/ linebacker William Hoffman.
The award goes to players who have “exemplified outstanding performance, attitude, and character on and off the field.” It is presented by Salesianum School alumnus Tom DeLucia and his wife, Pat, in memory of their son, who died in 1971.
DiGregorio, a two-year football starter at Archmere who also is a member of the lacrosse team, helped the Auks to a 7-3 record in 2017, throwing for 10 touchdowns and running for nine scores. His father, Joe DiGregorio, played quarterback at St. James High, leading the Bulldogs to the 1987 Catholic League playoffs.
Archmere’s Patrick Udovich, son of former Auks all-state linebacker Pat Udovich, a former Brookhaven resident, was co-winner of the 2016 DeLucia Award.

The Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum in Radnor is holding a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mickey Vernon, the Marcus Hook native who won two American League batting titles during his major-league baseball career (1939-60).
Rich Westcott, the former Daily Times sports writer who has written more than two dozen books about Philadelphia-area sports figures and teams, has copies for sale of his book “Mickey Vernon – The Gentleman First Baseman,” which details Vernon’s baseball career as well as his service in the Navy during World War II.
Information about the book can be obtained at richwestcott@verizon. com.
The Museum also is continuing its drive to raise funds to have a statue erected of Radnor High graduate Emlen Tunnell, a World War II hero and the first AfricanAmerican elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The statue fund-raising committee plans to have the dedication ceremony in June. The committee continues to accept donations and is selling ads for the program book that will be available at the ceremony. Ads come in full-page, half-page, quarter-page, and businesscard sizes.
Checks payable to Sports Legends Museum can be mailed to 301 Iven Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087.
