100 Years Ago – 1918:

Without coal and living alone, Miss Jan Buchanan, aged resident of the First Ward and former school teacher, was found critically ill at her home at 24th and Chester streets last night by Patrolman Scott. Miss Buchanan had not been seen for several days and it was believed that something was wrong. The patrolman and merchant William Gamble, a neighbor, forced their entrance into the house. There was no heat in the house and she was slowly dying.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

The State Office of Price Administra­tion announced today that it was permissibl­e to drive to a marriage conducted by a clergyman but not to a ceremony at which a justice of the peace officiates. A wedding conducted by a clergyman is deemed a religious ceremony and a motorist may drive to it if no other means of transporta­tion is available, without violating the “pleasure driving” ban.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

Penn-Delco School Director Frank Turner will be the speaker at the Aston Women’s Republican Club meeting Tuesday night at the municipal building on Pennell Road. He will discuss the duties and responsibi­lities of a school director.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

The feuding Chester City Council managed to agree for a moment yesterday and passed an ordinance against excessive noise, which was immediatel­y and repeatedly violated for most of the remainder of the three hour and 15-minute meeting. The day included: A pre-meeting demonstrat­ion to protest the recent firings of four Democratic employees; a minister bellowing at Mayor Barbara Bohannan Sheppard; police restrainin­g a mayor’s office volunteer from taking a run at the minster; heat exchanges between mayor and council; and assorted name-calling incidents involving members of different political camps. The theme from the Democratic camp on council was that former Republican Mayor Jack Nacrelli is running the city again since BohannanS heppard has been voting with the two GOP councilmen of late.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

Coming in just under the wire for a nominating meeting tonight, Delaware County Republican leaders are expected to name Wendell Craig Williams of Concord as their man to take on Democratic incumbent Joseph Sestak of Edgmont for the 7th District seat in Congress.
