Penn Wood girls slip past Chester

Carle Andrews poured in 16 points and Racquel Curry chipped in with 14 as Penn Wood earned a 49-46 Del Val League girls basketball win over Chester Thursday.

Andrews, a senior guard who recently scored her 1,000th career point, added six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Curry finished with four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.

Jada Hutt had 10 points, six rebounds and two steals for the Patriots (5-8).

Chester held a one-point advantage in the third before Penn Wood surged ahead and led by as many as seven points.

Monique Colbert led the way for the Clippers (4-8) with 13 points and 17 rebounds. Ceyrah Williams and Shaymoni DeShields scored 12 points apiece.

In another Del Val game: ACADEMY PARK 65, CHICHESTER 36» Mahya Woodton is getting closer to history.

The senior guard scored 17 points to pace the Knights and is 10 points away from breaking the Academy Park girls record for career points.

Shantalay Hightower sank four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for the Knights, who outscored the host Eagles, 46-9, in the middle two periods.

Dei’Ney Monet scored a gamehigh 20 points for Chichester. Ava Franz tossed in 11.

In the Catholic Academies: MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 61, SACRED HEART 35 » The Lions (7-7, 1-4) couldn’t bounce back after a second quarter in which they failed to score. Eileen Piombino, who is one of the leading scorers in Delaware County, netted a team-high 13 points in the loss. Kyra Quigley added eight.

In the Ches-Mont League UNIONVILLE 47, SUN VALLEY 18 » Maya Jacyszyn paced the Vanguards with nine points.

Boys Swimming

Mike Hannig and Matt Gray were triple-winners to lead Marple Newtown past Upper Darby in a Central League meet, 96-90.

Hannig touched the wall first in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, while helping the 200 medley relay to victory. Gray led off the medley relay, then notched wins in the 100 freestyle and 100 breasstrok­e.

Patrick Rankin (200 free relay, 500 free) and Hunter Youngblood (200 free relay, 50 free) each were double winners for the Royals.

Girls Swimming

Claire Hamilton and Emily Lehman won four events as Upper Darby cruised to a 10875 Central League decision over Upper Darby.

Hamilton began her afternoon with a winning performanc­e in the 200 freestyle. She was triumphant in the 100 freestyle and anchored the winning 200 free relay. Later, she capped up a big day by leading of the Royals’ 400 free relay.

Lehman claimed top honors in the 200 IM, 500 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay.

Marple’s Kayla Hammond won the 100 butterfly and Sarisa Jani took first in diving.

Boys Bowling

Will Nawn rolled a 247 high game and a 601 series, but Bonner & Prendergas­t dropped a 3-1 Catholic League decision to Father Judge.

Jason Ladley (202 game, 539 series) and Chris Orr (183 game) also played well for the Friars.

Girls Bowling

Maddie Gannon posted a 190 high game and a 552 series in Bonner & Prendergas­t’s 3-1 Catholic League defeat to St. Hubert.

Madison Eisenhart added a 161 high game and Catriona Corrigan rolled a 156 for the Pandas.

Boys Hockey

Bobby Gibson and Cal Buonocore tallied both goals to lead The Haverford School past Academy of the New Church, 2-0, in Independen­ce League action.

Carson Rooney registered the shutout in net for the Fords, stopping 19 shots.
