Bonner-Prendie boys pull out another thrilling win

For sheer drama, it will take quite a lot to top the week the boys basketball team at Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergas­t experience­d.

Isaiah Wong banked a mid-range jumper with seven seconds left to give the Friars their third straight win in their last possession or overtime with a 68-67 Catholic League victory over West Catholic Sunday afternoon.

A week ago Sunday, Ajiri Johnson’s dunk at the buzzer gave MBAP a 63-61 triumph over St. Joseph’s Prep at home. Five days later, Donovan Rodriguez scored five of his eight points in overtime to lift the Friars to a 68-66 victory over Roman Catholic at Community College of Philadelph­ia.

The Friars (13-2, 6-0 PCL) were sharp from the free-throw line once again, shooting 23-for-28. They were 17-for-22 from the line in the win over Roman. Wong led MBAP with 20 points. Tariq Ingraham (16) and Michael Perretta (12) also reached double figures.

Girls Basketball

A five-point first-quarter lead wasn’t enough for Garnet Valley in the Hoops for Hope tournament at the University of the Sciences.

Archbishop Wood rallied triumph over the Jaguars.

Emily McAteer scored six of her gamehigh 18 points to stake GV to a 12-5 lead after one period, but the Vikings countered with 34 points over the next three quarters to erase that deficit. Brianne Borcky had eight points for the Jags. ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 52, GWYNEDD MERCY 36 » Harlem Jennings, Wynter Bess and Molly Mascianton­io combined for 37 points to pace the Patriots in the Hoops for Hope tournament. Jennings led the balanced attack with 14 points. Bess added 12 points and Mascianton­io 11 to help the Patriots bounce back from a 62-39 loss to Neumann-Goretti Saturday.

Wrestling

for a 39-33

Freshman Griffin Hollingswo­rth earned outstandin­g wrestler honors in Garnet Valley’s half of the pool as the Jaguars finished in sixth place at the Exeter Blue-White Duals Saturday.

Hollingswo­rth (113 pounds) went 3-2 in the tournament and the Jaguars went 2-3 as a team, beating Coatesvill­e (39-30) and Hazletown Area (41-29) and falling to Malvern Prep (56-12), host Exeter (58-12) and Quakertown (50-18) in the sixth-place match.

Junior Kevin Pulitti was 5-0 at 120 pounds. He won his first three matches by pin in the first period and captured his last two bouts by decision.

Tommy Mahoney, who was recently named to the pafootball­news.com 6A all-state team, went 4-1 at 285 pounds with three of the wins by pin. He won four in a row after dropping a 3-2 decision to Malvern’s Harry Stringer in his first match of the day. BUCKLEY DUALS » Lightweigh­ts Andrew Parente (106) and Jake Shaifer (113, 120) both went undefeated as The Haverford School went 2-2 in the tournament. The host Fords defeated Roman Catholic (37-33) and William Tennent (35-33) and lost to Southern Lehigh (42-30) and WC East (60-15).

Parente had three wins by fall and one by forfeit. Shaifer went 1-0 at 113 with a pin and 3-0 at 120 with two wins by fall and another by technical fall. After dropping his first match at 132 Michael Clymer responded with three straight victories to go 3-1.

Jack McQuaid ranked up four pins at 170 pounds and Nick Poulos (138) remained undefeated to help Archbishop Carroll go 2-2. The Patriots topped Northern Lehigh (42-24) and tied George Washington, but won the match on Criteria H, the greater number of takedowns. Carroll fell to Germantown Academy (4524) and CB Est (66-6).

McQuaid improved to 17-1, while Poulos raised his record to 16-0 with a pin and two victories by forfeit.

In nonleague action: ARCHBISHOP WOOD 49, RADNOR 25 » The Raiders fell behind 31-9 and could not recover. Jahmair Rider (145) won by pin. Chris Henkel (126) won by major decision and Jack Horvath (182) was victorious by decision. Tyler Tornoe (106) and Robby Hudrisko (152) received forfeit victories for the Raiders.

Track & Field

Penn Wood had a good day in the New Balance Games at the Armory in New York Saturday.

The Patriots won the girls 4 x 400-meter relay in 4 minutes, 2.63 seconds. Sophomore Dhaniyh Toodles took second in the girls varsity 300-meter dash in 42.83 seconds to help the Patriots finish seventh in the team competitio­n.

On the boys side, Penn Wood was fourth in the 4 x 400 (3:29.66), once place behind Upper Darby (3:28.63).
