CHESTER » Two city men were fatally shot in separate incidents that occurred within less than a three-hour timespan Tuesday night, marking the first two homicides for the city in 2018.

A third city man was wounded in a third shooting incident reported a few hours later early Wednesday.

The deceased victims were identified as Chadease Coleman, 20, and Brian Vick, 36, according to a prepared release issued Wednesday by city Police Capt. James Chubb.

The wounded man was identified as 55-year-old Gary Lane.

Police have no indication that the three shootings are related, Police Chief James Nolan IV said Wednesday. But “any time you have three incidents in the same night, you look at a possible connection.”

Regarding the ongoing investigations, “detectives are making progress,” Nolan said, though he declined to elaborate.

It was at 8:31 p.m. Wednesday that city officers responded to the 500 block of Mosley Court for the report of a shooting. Arriving officers found a white Kia Sportage in the middle of the street, occupied by a male in the driver’s seat. Later identified as Coleman, the male was unresponsive and appeared to have multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

“This is the first homicide in the city of Chester this year,” Chubb stated.

City Detective Dave DeFrank and county Detective Timothy Deery are leading the ongoing investigation into Coleman’s death. Anyone with information is asked to contact DeFrank at ddefrank95@chesterpolice.org or Deery at 610-891-8030.

Shots rang out again at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday, this time in the area of the 2600 block of Swarts Street. Police were initially dispatched for a report of shots fired. The officers were en route when they received a call for a walk-in gunshot victim at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

“Upon arriving at the hospital, it was learned that the walkin gunshot victim was related to the shots fired call located in the 2600 block of Swarts Street. Upon speaking to hospital staff, officers were informed that the victim, who was later identified as Brian Vick, was suffering from numerous gunshot wounds, to numerous parts of his body,” the release states.

Despite valiant attempts by the hospital staff, Vick succumbed to his injuries at 11:27 p.m., according to authorities.

City Detective Benjamin Thomas and county Detective Michael Jay are leading the ongoing investigation into Vick’s death. Anyone with information is asked to contact Thomas by phone at 610-447-8426 or by email at bthomas306@chesterpolice.org, or Jay by phone at 610891-4711.

It was shortly after 1:10 a.m. Wednesday that city officers responded for a third time for a gun-related incident, a shooting in the area of the 600 block of Highland Avenue.

At the scene, police found a grey Ford Taurus with two broken windows. The officers’ initial investigation revealed there was a chain-reaction accident involving four vehicles.

Officers were only on the scene for a few minutes when they were approached by Lane, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower back. Lane was subsequently transported by ambulance to Crozer.

City Detective Rhaheem Bladen is leading the ongoing investigation. He can be reached at 610447-8420 or at rblanden280@ chesterpolice.org.
