Eagles gear getting gobbled up on Media streets

MEDIA » The Super Bowl has come to town and Sam Edwards wants you to have your piece of it. Edwards. of Sarasota. Fla.. works for Superior Land Concessions and for the past few days has been selling Eagles gear from his tent on the corner of Manchester Avenue and Baltimore Pike.

“I was rooting for Jacksonville, but the Eagles are better than the Vikings,” joked Edwards. “As a lifelong Green Bay fan we want anyone who beats Minnesota. and I certainly don’t want that cold.”

When Edwards arrived last Tuesday he was so cold he donned a Falcons “2017 champions” wool cap to stay warm — that is, until his boss called to check in and found out a photographer was there. He quickly switched to an Eagles hat,

Edwards said other salesmen from his company have been working downtown but he prefers the suburbs. He’s worked for the company for the past 20 years in its carnival business, and for the past five years traveled to different cities selling gear during the Super Bowl and World Series. In 2016, he was in Chicago for the World Series. He described it as amazing to see fans who had not experienced a championship in their lifetimes celebrating.

“You should see my man cave. It’s Eagles green,” said Joe Seefeldt of Glenolden, who stopped and took an interest in the Dilly, Dilly wool caps. “I’m looking for unusual gear. I have 40 jerseys, helmets, even McNabb’s cleats.

“I’m jacked,” said Seefeldt. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this and sports really brings people together.”.

“I’m a big eagles fan, but my husband is a Jets fan,” said Regina Tannenbaum, who was on hand to pick up a couple of shirts and hats.

“I don’t need any of that stuff myself but if it makes people happy that’s great,” said Tannenbaum’s brother, Ray Kane of Drexel Hill, who was with Tannenbaum. “It’s all sunshine and rainbows.”

Prices range from $15 for children’s T-shirts to $25 for adults. Among the items is a Zach Ertz custom shirt and a Dilly Dilly wool cap. If that price too steep for you, for $5 each there is a selection of shirts from years past — Michael Vick, Terrell Owens, and other shirts that were made for past Eagles teams that never sold.

Edwards said people have been very receptive with lots of horn honking from passing motorists, though he gets an occasional sneer from passing Cowboy and Steeler fans. He is expecting a new shipment of NFL-licensed gear Thursday. The licensed gear would greatly increase his selection.

Edwards said he will be out selling everyday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the Saturday night before the Super Bowl. Then the former Milwaukee native said he was looking forward to watching the game from the comfort of his own couch in Florida.
