REVOLVING DOORS
I’ve been watching Channel 10 news and Channel 3 news off and on since I was a kid, and I’m now 61 years old. They keep changing their staff on their news. On Channel 3, ever since the days of Vince Leonard, they’ve been changing their newscasters right and left. You can’t even get used to them before they’re gone. The same with Channel 10, except for “Hurricane” Schwartz. They’ve been changing their people all the way back to John Facenda. But Channel 6, only if someone retires or they leave or they get a better job, do they change their staff. They’ve got the right format. I don’t know how any other newscast in Philadelphia stays on the air. That’s my opinion of Philadelphia news.
TWENTY REASONS WHY
To “Cough It Up,” you mean to tell me that a person working at Walmart stocking shelves should make the same amount of money that a welder makes? Then why wouldn’t all the welders just quit their jobs and go to Walmart and stock shelves? Welding is a hazardous job and it can cause all kind of lung infections. It’s a real bad job. You should think it over before you call.
ANOTHER HAPPY READER
I cannot believe the Times put this opinion in, sent to Amazon, that represents Philadelphia. Philadelphia is not the only part of the Delaware Valley that would benefit from Amazon. I cannot believe that you would put this in there as a letter to Mr. Bezos. I don’t understand you. I won’t read you again. BYE
A WELD OF HURT
To these callers arguing about pay at Walmart versus welding: First off, $20 an hour starting pay for an unskilled position at Walmart as the labor market stand right now is a joke. And to the other caller, to the best of my recollection, welding has generally been on the lower end of pay scales for skilled labor. I think you’re grasping at an outliner to try to prove a point. But if you have friends who have been in it for years and they’re still barely making $20 an hour, I think they have a labor relations problem on their hands.
THEY’RE LAUGHING AT US
I hope everybody has voted for Trump is happy. He’s been making the United States of America a laughingstock of the world. Somebody’s got to get him out of there. He’s making this country look like an idiot because he’s an idiot. I Get out of there, Trump. Leave office – you’re nothing but an idiot.
A JOB FOR ALEX
Why doesn’t the Times have Alex Rose do a story on the four open positions on the Court of Common Pleas. The Republicans who want those judgeships are probably lined up down State Street for that position. Alex should do a job on that and see if Gov. Wolf can get a Democrat in among those four seats on the court. ASSIGNMENT EDITOR
WAITING FOR GALLUP
People crack me up. Why do we have to have a Gallup poll for everything we do in this country? Didn’t we vote and elect people to make these decisions? What’s the matter — they’re so far out of touch that they’ve got no common sense with what’s right and what’s wrong? You get paid a lot of money to know what to do down there. But they got a ring everybody in the country on the phone and put them in a Gallup poll – and they never call me.
HIS WEEKEND GIG
When I read Chris Freind’s column this week with the list of convicted Pennsylvania politicians, at first I misread “Vince Fumo, senator and powerbroker” as “senator and pawnbroker.” I had to laugh when I realized, given the history of Pennsylvania and particularly Philadelphia politics, that wouldn’t be out of reason to stop in a pawnshop and see a state senator back from Harrisburg on Saturdays at his family business negotiating a loan on gold watch. ’50 PERCENT OF RETAIL’
EDSELS FOREVER
I wish Ford would bring back the beautiful Edsel again. It was a beautiful car, built solid, and that car was strong. IF IT AIN’T STEEL, IT AIN’T REAL
