Van Deusen holds off charge to lead Marple Newtown to win

Even though he lost, Jacob Van Deusen still came up big for Marple Newtown Friday night.

Van Deusen’s one-point loss at 132 pounds enabled the Tigers to hold on for a 35-34 Central League wrestling victory over Lower Merion.

After five straight wins by forfeit, Matt Checchia’s 13-11 victory over Paul Mariani III in overtime at 106 pounds gave Marple Newtown a 35-15 lead with four bouts to go. The Aces won the next three by pin, major decision and pin to cut the deficit to 35-31, which meant Lower Merion’s Andrew Coughlin had to win by technical fall or fall over van Duesen for the Aces to win the match.

Van Deusen hung tough and dropped a 6-5 decision to Coughlin to spoil the comeback bid. Freshman Jimmy Nania scored a 16-10 win at 138 for MN.

The Blue Devils won the last seven matches by forfeit to erase an 18-6 deficit. The Fords won five of the six matches that were contested. Andrew Parente (106) and Michael Clymer (132) won by fall. Parente pinned Luke Neveroski, while Clymer decked Peter Humphreys.

Jake Shaifer (120), Ryan Shepherd (126) and Kwaku Abubofour (220) all won by decision.

Boys Swimming

Seniors Grant Michael, David Kearney, Marty Boyle and Ryan Haughey were individual winners, but it wasn’t enough as Sun Valley dropped a 9577 Ches-Mont League decision to Unionville.

Michaels was first in the 50 freestyle. Kearney won diving. Boyle captured the 100 backstroke, and Haughey was victorious in the 100 breaststro­ke. Nick Furman, Dan Gauzza, Dylan Hermann and Austin Whittingto­n teamed up to win the 400 free relay.

Girls Swimming

Madison Mazone

(100 backstroke) and Samantha Hocker (100 breaststro­ke) were the only individual winners as Sun Valley fell to Unionville, 97-81.

Jordan Bondrowski, Jackie Wynes, Madison Koons and Chelsea Brees were first in the 400 free relay.

Girls Hockey

Laura Rader scored three unassisted goals to lead Radnor to a 3-1 victory over Lower Merion.

Rader tied the game 11:53 into the first period, and then scored twice in a four-minute span in the second period to put the Raiders up to stay. Goalie Tess Landry stopped 20 of 21 shots to get the win.

Boys Hockey

Jayden Sison collected three goals and one assist, and Michael Cameron added two goals and one assist as Conestoga rolled over Marple Newtown, 10-0.

Scott MacMillian chipped in with one goal and four assists for the Pioneers.
