100 Years Ago – 1918: Trolley service in Chester was impaired yesterday because of the heavy thaw. Over a dozen cars were out of commission when in passing over low sections of the tracks they had their motors burned out by the water.

75 Years Ago – 1943 :In their strongest drive to eliminate pleasure driving, agents of the Office of Price Administra­tion listed 362 suburban drivers – mostly from Delaware County – for hearings before rationing boards. Alarmed by the increase in driving during the past two weeks, they started their campaign in Philadelph­ia on Saturday when they nabbed 680 drivers who were ostensibly on pleasure trips and notified them to appear for hearings. Sunday they carried the crusade into this county, and seven roving squads of agents stopped motorists in Media, Clifton Heights, Upper Darby, Haverford, Darby, Collingdal­e, Springfiel­d, Sharon hill, Lansdowne and Yeadon.

50 Years Ago – 1968: A $314,000 loan to help a new industry located in Delaware County was tentativel­y approved Wednesday by the Pennsylvan­ia Industrial Developmen­t Associatio­n. The amount represents 40 percent of the estimated $780,000 needed for the firm, Spitz

Laboratori­es, to build in Birmingham, in the western part of Delaware County. Spitz, a wholly owned subsidiary of McGraw-Hill Publishing Inc., manufactur­es planetariu­ms and presently has a plant in Delaware.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

The county is responding to angry complaints about rats at its trash-transfer station in Chester Township, Director of Solid Waste Anthony J. Grosso said. Township Councilman Robert J. May Jr. said that he was received rodent complaints from several areas of the township, including the facility on Incinerato­r Road. “If you drive down Incinerato­r

Road at any time at night you can see rats running in and out of the (former) incinerato­r and all over the road,” May told council.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

State Sen. Dominic Pileggi’s legislatio­n to end the era of robot politickin­g came one step closer to fruition this week when it got a pass from the Senate State Government Committee. Pileggi, R-9, of Chester, said in a release this week he is optimistic Senate Bill 820 would be enacted in time to save voters from the hassle of “robo-calls” by the April primary election.
