MFH honors pioneering aviatrix

MEDIA » Media Fellowship House, 302 S. Jackson St., hosts a special re-enactment of aviator Bessie Coleman in honor of Black History Month on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m.

Coleman became the first African-American (and Native American) woman to earn a pilot’s license in 1921. Although later honored and admired for her achievements, Coleman first had to travel to Europe for training, having no opportunities to learn to fly at home due to racial discrimination.

Back by popular demand from last year’s re-enactment performance of Harriet Tubman, Daisy Nelson Century, Ed.D., portrays Bessie Coleman this year. Century is an actress, speaker, author, radio talk show host and educator. She combines all this experience as a re-enactor of many figures from history.

MFH encourages families to attend, and suggests the program of about an hour is suited for all but the very young children.

Following Century’s presentation, students are invited to briefly share information about heroes they researched while doing Black History Month projects. This is an informal and voluntary part of the program. The program concludes with light refreshments for all guests.

The event is free. Guests are asked to RVSP to jerry@ mediafellowshiphouse.org
