Chester’s Johns makes her mark in 400 ... again

Add another gold medal to Johns’ impressive collection.

The freshman from Chester picked up her fourth overall victory of the season and third in the 400-meter dash when she edged Penn Wood’s Elicia Moore for the title at the Pennsylvan­ia Track and Field Coaches Associatio­n Indoor Carnival at Lehigh Saturday.

Johns finished in 59.77 seconds, while Moore was timed in 59.79. The Patriots and Clippers reversed places in the 4 x 400 with the Patriots coming out on top and the Clippers taking second. Chester also finished third in the 4 x 800.

Notre Dame’s Jessica Schneider took home two medals. She was fourth in the mile with a personal best time of 5:07.92. She also was sixth in the 800 in 2:21.60. Keara Seasholtz of Radnor placed fifth in the 800. Springfiel­d’s Symphonie Blalock was sixth in the shot put, while Upper Darby placed fourth in the 4 x 200.

Boys Track

Kamani James Jackson of Chester had a pretty good weekend. He won the 60-meter hurdles at the Track & Field Coaches Associatio­n of Greater Philadelph­ia’s Last Chance meet Friday night with a personal best time of 8.18 and came right back and took third in the same event Saturday at the PTFCA Indoor Carnival.

Jackson, Malachi Langley and Lamaj Curry also helped the Clippers win the 4 x 400. Langley also was second in the 400, while Curry took fourth in the 800.

Penn Wood was the only other Delco team to claim gold at the indoor carnival with a victory in the 4 x 800. Tayvan Williams of Penn Wood picked up his second medal of the weekend with a sixth-place finish in the long jump. He also was sixth Friday night at the last chance meet with a personal best leap of 20-11.

Philip Shovlin of Springfiel­d finished second in the 200, while Radnor placed second in the 4 x 800 and fourth in the distance medley relay. In the Last Chance meet: Patrick Theveny and Avery Lederer of Penncrest went 1-2 in the 3,000. Theveny won with a personal best time of 8:55.18. Teammate Matt Arndt won the shot put with a personal best throw of 49-3¾. The Lions also took third in the DMR.

Will Merhige of The Haverford School finished second in the mile with a PR of 4:30.44. Teammate Dan Whaley earned a bronze medal in the 400. Dominick Brown from Chichester was second in the 200. Penn Wood’s Talus Gaymore placed fifth in the 800. The Patriots also were second in the 4 x 400.

Upper Darby won the 4 x 400. Also for the Royals, Gbarwho Flahn took sixth in the 400 in a personal best time of 52.06 and Jalen Camille was sixth in the long jump. Interboro’s Tadhjae Jordan-Gordon was sixth in the triple jump. Strath Haven finished sixth in the 4 x 200.

Boys Basketball

Stingy defense in the fourth quarter enabled The Christian Academy to earn a 75-67 win over Springfiel­d (Montco).

With the score knotted up at the end of three quarters, TCA outscored Springfiel­d 17-9 the rest of the way.

Grant Sareyka poured in a game-high 23 points and Tehron Phillips scored 20. Sam Geathers added 20 points in for TCA.

In nonleague action: SUN VALLEY 65, SOLANCO 56 » Vinny Deangelo poured in 31 points and Shair Brown Morris scored 19 to lead the Vanguards, who went on a 22-8 run in the second quarter to pull away. Marvin Freeman added eight points.

Wrestling

AJ Califano and Tyler Forbes won four matches each as Springfiel­d went 2-2 at the MLK Duals. Califano won twice at 138 pounds and twice at 145 as the Cougars topped host Martin Luther King (42-36) and New Foundation­s Charter (56-6), and fell to Wyoming Valley West (46-22) and Marina Brancetti Academy (39-22).

Forbes was 3-0 at 152 and 1-0 at 145. He won three times by fall and once by major decision. Danny Gallagher also picked up three wins for the Cougars at 138 and 145 pounds. David Bagirov and Danny Tommarelli were 3-1 at 126 and 132 pounds, respective­ly.
