Monaghan has hot hand as Hawks upset Dukes

Alyssa Monaghan, the 2015 Daily Times Player of the Year and Bonner & Prendergas­t graduate, scored 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists to lead Saint Joseph’s to a 69-50 upset of Duquesne.

The Hawks (12-12) raced out to a 25-13 lead in the first quarter and shot 52.9 percent (27-for51) from the floor. They limited the host Dukes (20-5) to 31 percent shooting.

Meghan Matthews and Nomi Washington each tallied 19 points as the Cavs (21-2) jumped out to a 23-6 lead after one quarter. Halle Burgess drained a shot from beyond the arc with five minutes left to put the Green Terror (10-8) ahead to stay.

Sierra Berkel registered team highs in points (13) and rebounds (eight) for Haverford. WCU’s women’s team hasn’t won that many games in a row since the 1971-72 campaign.

Porscha Speller became the 20th player in team history to score 1,000 points. Mia Hopkins (22 points, 13 rebounds, 12 assists) posted the club’s first triple-double since 2015.

Briana Hedgepath had 13 points and Yasmine Dorrielan registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolves (5-18), who had trailed 5316 at halftime.

Men’s Basketball

Tyler Drews had the game of his career in Widener’s 104-80 victory over Hood College.

The junior guard poured in 40 points, shooting 15-for-20 from the floor and connected on 10-for12 from beyond the arc. He is only the second player in the Middle Athletic Conference to score 40 or more points this season.The 10 treys are tied for the ninth most in a single game in Division III this season. CABRINI 88, ROSEMONT 83 » Tyheim Monroe scored 21 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as Cabrini recorded its ninth straight win and 20th of the season.

Anthony Wright-Downing was 6-for-6 from the field and scored 18 points for the Cavaliers (20-3). Deryl Bagwell tossed in 13 points and hauled in nine rebounds, while Trey Smith had 10 points and five assists. EASTERN 82, MANHATTANV­ILLE 68» Darius Washington scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half. He added seven assists and five rebounds for the Eagles (13-10), who shot 59 percent from the floor after halftime. Victor Pena chipped in with 12 points. Jesse Turkson, who had a previous career high of 20 points during Haverford’s first win over McDaniel, eclipsed that mark with 21 points. The freshman hot 10-of-12 from the field and pulled down 13 rebounds to record his fourth double-double of the season. Jonathan Lang netted 17 points and Joe Hartman had 14.
