100 Years Ago – 1918:

Two hundred men, employees of the Chester Shipbuildi­ng Co., are at present being housed in the old Gallagher Garage, Seventh and Sproul streets. The inability of the shipbuildi­ng company to find suitable housing for their employees is becoming a more serious question each day and an effort is being made to secure available quarters that can be easily converted into sleeping rooms.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

More than 170,000 additional industrial workers will be needed this year by war plants in the Philadelph­ia area, including Chester and Delaware County, it was stated by the advisory committee of the Vocational Training for War Production program at their meeting in the Chester Club. Many of these thousands will have to be women, the committee believes.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

A Delaware County soldier has been killed in action in Vietnam, the U.S. Defense Department announced. He was identified as Spec. 4 James Johnson Jr., son of Mrs. Albert T. Zorskis of Eddystone. He was killed during combat with hostile forces. It was the soldier’s second tour of duty in Vietnam. The flag of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Ridley Township, was lowered to half-staff when word of the young man’s death was received. Johnson had been a member of the church.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

Fifteen more students have exhibited symptoms of the mysterious illness that has sickened approximat­ely 160 students at Villanova University since Tuesday night. They suffered the same stomach ailments that sent 60 students to four local hospital emergency rooms and caused 25 more to go to the college infirmary Tuesday night and Wednesday. Evidence does not point to food poisoning or a virus, and a bacteria level test on the campus water supply show it is sanitary.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

Be forewarned: Building a sports stadium can be risky, a sports business expert told a lecture hall packed with Widener University students Monday. Widely published journalist Evan Weiner, author of the book, “The Business and Politics of Sports,” was invited to the school to give students an insider’s look at some of the politics behind stadium developmen­ts around the country. At the same time, he threw some cold water on high hopes that drawing a Major League Soccer stadium to Chester could spur an economic revival.
