CHESTER » Delaware County Daily Times reporter and assistant sports editor Matthew DeGeorge discusses his experience­s as a sports journalist on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Delaware County Press Club’s luncheon at Talen Energy Stadium, 1 Stadium Drive.

DeGeorge has worked at the Daily Times since 2010 as a copy editor and reporter. His beats include the Philadelph­ia Union MLS team as well as a number of high school sports. He also contribute­s event coverage of Philadelph­ia pro sports and multiday events in the city as well as feature stories and occasional columns.

He is the author of two books on the history of swimming, “Duels in the Pool: Swimming’s Greatest Rivalries” and “Pooling Talent: Swimming’s Greatest Teams.” He covered the 2012 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials and has covered events in 18 different sports — and counting.

A graduate of Saint Joseph’s University, De George earned the 2013 Bruce Bennett Award for national curling writer of the year. His work includes frequent appearance­s on local radio as well as television and podcast work.

Also speaking at the luncheon is Carl Cherkin, Vice President, Business Relations for the Philadelph­ia Union, giving the latest Union soccer news, talking about Talen Energy Stadium and filling guests in on what fans can look forward to this season.

Following the speakers and lunch, a small group of attendees will the opportunit­y to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium.

Meda Theatre gala March 3

MEDIA » The Media Theatre hosts “There’s No Place Like Home” on Saturday, March 3, a special evening with a one-nightonly concert performanc­e from Broadway performers Jenny Lee Stern and Nicholas Saverine. The night includes a reception in the theatre’s Crystal Room, a silent auction, and the presentati­on of the Community Achievemen­t Award to Dr. Raymond J. and Mrs. Teresa J. Vivacqua.

The evening is both a fundraiser and a celebratio­n for Delaware County’s only profession­al music theatre. Jenny Lee Stern and Nicholas Saverine performing on the stage that has, over the years, become “home” to them as well as many other performers and patrons. Several Media Theatre students also perform during the benefit, along with JP Dunphy and Jenna Pastuszek. Kelly Briggs emcees the one-night-only event.

Jenny Lee Stern was seen on Broadway in “Rocky” and “A Christmas Story: The Musical” (Madison Square Garden). She toured the country as Mary Delgado in “Jersey Boys”, originatin­g the role in the Chicago and Toronto companies. OffBroadwa­y, Ms. Stern garnered critical acclaim for her portrayals of Judy Garland, Patti Lupone, Bernadette Peters, Sutton Foster (and more!) in “Forbidden Broadway: Alive and Kicking.” Regionally, she has found her niche playing “Patsy Cline” in “Always, Patsy Cline”, which is returning to The Media Theatre this spring following a successful summer run. Philadelph­ia credits include: “West Side Story”, “Godspell”, “Lobby Hero”, “42nd Street”, “High Society” (Walnut Street Theatre); “Seussical”, “Cats” (Media Theatre), “The Great American Trailer Park Xmas Musical” (Montgomery Theatre).

Nicholas F. Saverine is delighted to be back at the award-winning Media Theatre where he was recently seen as Maurice in Disney’s “Beauty And The Beast”. He’s also been at Media in “1776” and as the Hospital Ghost in “Ghost”, Mr. Bumble in “Oliver!”, Max von Mayerling in “Sunset Boulevard”, Fester in “The Addams Family”, and Mr. Anagnos in “The Miracle Worker”. Locally he’s been on stage at The Walnut Street Theater, Prince, Arden and People’s Light. His Broadway credits include “Les Miserables”, “The Phantom of the Opera”. Internatio­nal credits include “Dance of the Vampires”, “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Les Miserables”.

Give blood around county

Winter storms and the flu don’t just mean a lot of people are missing work and school — they also mean they can’t keep their American Red Cross blood and platelet donation appointmen­ts. The Red Cross is urging healthy donors of all blood types to roll up a sleeve to help maintain the blood supply for patients in need.

In 2018, severe winter weather forced about 600 blood drives to cancel, resulting in more than 17,500 uncollecte­d blood and platelet donations. And, widespread flu across the U.S. has resulted in lower turnout at blood drives.

Blood and platelet donations are needed in the coming days to help replenish the blood supply and ensure patients continue to receive lifesaving treatments. Donors can help even more patients when they invite a loved one, friend or co-worker to give with them.
