Fire caused by an overheated dryer in the Yarn Department of the Aberfoyle Manufacturing Company, Third Street and Morton Avenue, Chester, occasioned considerable excitement among the operatives in the mill, and would have gained large proportions but for the prompt and efficient work of the Emergency Department of the company
75 Years Ago – 1943:
Delaware Countians shivered today as the coldest weather of this winter plunged temperatures below the zero mark. Scores of cars were frozen and deserted on street and highways as a bitter wind swept the county. In Edgmont, “the icebox” of the county, the unofficial temperature was 12 below zero, the lowest mark in nine years.
50 Years Ago – 1968:
Record employment, wages and salaries and value of production were reported in Delaware County during the 1956-66 period, according to Pennsylvania Department of Internal Affairs statistics. Employment at county industries registered a 10 percent increase – 4,927 jobs – during the decade. Total employed at industries at the end of 1966 was 53,508. Wages and salaries at the end of the period were $388,545,000, a gain of $155 million since 1956.
25 Years Ago – 1993:
A barn on the Dick Darlington property in Middletown, slated to be restored in connection with plan for the 86-unit Darlington Valley planned residential development of townhouses and single dwellings, will be demolished. The landowner/developer had intended to use the barn for storage and possible housing of livestock on a portion of the 102-acre property he will keep for his use, but township council was concerned the barn would be too close to residential properties.
10 Years Ago – 2008:
A woman complained to Eddystone Borough Council recently that police are harassing kids on skateboards even when they are not in restricted areas. Robin Henderson said police have stopped kids from participating in the sport on side streets, and her own son was stopped by a police officer while he was on his way to the store for bread and was carrying his skateboard. Council President Tom Orio said the borough has land on Ninth Street earmarked for a skate park, but has not been successful in raising money to construct the park.
