100 Years Ago – 1918: Fifty-two suspicious characters were halted by Chester police and searched last night following the order of Mayor McDowell. None of the men possessed revolvers, knives or other weapons. It is the intention of the police department to search for weapon carriers and anyone caught in the net will be severely dealt with.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

Miss Leona M. Sealey, of 11 E. Chelten Road, Parkside, a physical education instructor at Chester High School, was injured in the gymnasium yesterday when a demonstration she was giving went haywire. She was giving a demonstration

from a springboard to a class when she suddenly lost her balance and fell to the floor, fracturing and dislocating her right elbow.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

Several Delaware County educators indicated today the U.S. Selective Service System’s new draft deferment policies – canceling deferments for most graduate students and teachers, except those in medicine or ministry – could have serious effects on local education. Several college administrators and County School Superintendent Clyde E. Dalton used phrases like “tremendously concerned” and “very difficult” in reacting

to probable effects of the new policies. This action presumably means that persons, such as teachers, who were formerly draft exempt for occupational reasons, now will be eligible for the draft.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

Westinghouse will order trash trucks headed for its Resource Recovery plant off Thurlow Street, a corporation representative said – if the county and city help it pay the $678,164 bill to build an alternative route on Harwick Street. That offer was met with some skepticism by members of the Delaware County and city councils. While they agreed that the truck traffic, which has

sparked an outcry from the community, has to be moved, they didn’t immediately resolve the future of Harwick Street.

10 Years Ago – 2008: A Drexel Hill resident considered a “big-time player” dealing drugs in the tristate area by officials was arrested and jailed Friday. Bags of suspected cocaine and marijuana, with a street value of $67,000, drug paraphernalia, cell phones and $3,397 were seized by drug agents after staking out a house located on a residential cul-de-sac. Three vehicles were also confiscated.
