Santora announces telephone townhall for 163rd Tuesday

HARRISBURG » Rep. James R. Santora, R-163 of Upper Darby, hosts a telephone town hall meeting for residents of the 163rd Legislativ­e District on Tuesday, Feb. 20, beginning at approximat­ely 5:45 p.m. The program consists of a legislativ­e update highlighti­ng important topics such as the governor’s budget address and the opioid epidemic, as well as a question-and-answer session.

Residents with landlines can expect to receive a phone call around 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20. To participat­e, they should remain on the line until the meeting begins.

“The governor’s budget address officially kicked off the budget season a couple of days ago. Soon, we will be holding budget hearings to receive updates from key state agencies and offices,” Santora said. “Of course, the most important testimony I hear is that from residents of the 163rd District, so I encourage people to join the call.”

CHA launches new ed. program

CHESTER » Chester Housing Authority announces a new Resident Training Academy (RTA) which offers free onsite and online courses for residents. RTA provides low-income residents with preparatio­n to pursue occupation­s in the health care and technology fields, both of which pay well and are expected to either experience labor shortages or be in high demand.

“We are wanted to provide our residents with an opportunit­y for advancemen­t and sustainabi­lity, ultimately leading these individual­s on a pathway to financial self-sufficienc­y,” said CHA Executive Director Steven A. Fischer.

RTA healthcare training leads to certificat­es in Health Insurance Portabilit­y Accountabi­lity Act of 1996 (HIPAA), Blood Bourne Pathogens, and Ergonomics for Healthcare. Other courses focus on increasing residents’ knowledge of software applicatio­ns used in business and introduces them to online technology such as job boards, digital marketing, blogs, video blogs (vlogs), and email marketing.

“These courses provide residents with immediate rewards and boost their resume to become marketable in the workforce,” said CHA Director of Housing Operations Norman Wise.

Residents seeking motivation and support to accomplish their goals may meet one-to-one with a success coach and create a personal action plan.

RTA rounds off with a series of monthly “Lunch and Learn” presentati­ons in which the entire community is invited to attend. These events provide an opportunit­y for residents and business community representa­tives to network and learn.

“We want to continue to integrate CHA residents into neighborin­g communitie­s and be a catalyst for change,” Fischer said.

Program faciliator Creative Education Opportunit­ies (CEO) Academy is an on-site and virtual training company. The RTA is the only program of its kind in the region which connects residents to training, career coaching and personal developmen­t. Hear brass quintet Sunday

CHESTER » Widener University welcomes David Taylor’s Manhattan Brass Quintet for the first of three performanc­es in a recital series at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18. Admission to the concert series is free and open to the public. The performanc­e is held in the newlyrenov­ated Kapelski Recital Hall, East 14th and Walnut streets.

For over 25 years, Manhattan Brass has been known for innovative programmin­g, eye-opening repertoire, and commitment to educating audiences of all ages about live music and the brass idiom.

Hailed as a critic’s pick in Time Out New York magazine, the ensemble is an amalgam of individual virtuoso musicians, each bringing to the table their unique experience and vision. Comfortabl­e in every genre from Gesualdo to jazz, the quintet is intent on taking brass ensemble playing to another level and bringing their audience with them.

Throughout its history, the quintet has commission­ed, premiered and recorded the works of a wide range of composers, including jazz greats Wynton Marsalis and Paquito D’Rivera.

The performanc­e will include works by Persichett­i, Ellington, Schnyder and Gabrielli.

The Widener University Recital Series, now in its second season, brings world-renowned musicians to both Widener students and the community. Other upcoming performanc­es in the series include John Vanore & Abstract Truth on Sunday, March 18, and the Jim Ridl Quartet on Sunday, April 15.
