Penn Wood’s Carroll has golden kick

Kyra Carroll’s kick was the difference between gold and silver for the Penn Wood senior Friday night at the Delaware Valley Girls Track & Field Coaches Associatio­n Meet of Champions.

Carroll’s kick helped her edge Baldwin School’s Myla Barnett with a winning time of 2 minutes, 19.30 seconds. Barnett finished in 2:19.66. Carroll’s victory was one of five by Delaware County athletes or relay teams. It also was a theme for the Patriots. Penn Wood had to come from behind to beat Central in the 4 x 200. Penn Wood started the night with a fifthplace finish in the 4 x 800.

Jessica Schneider won the mile with a personal best time of 5:05.03. Cecilia Katcavage continued her dominance in the shot put with a winning throw of 36 feet, 10½ inches. Chester’s Jiya Clayton (sixth in 400), Upper Darby’s Jerenita Sokan (sixth in 60-meter dash) and Ridley’s Meghan Lynch (third in the triple jump) also came home with some hardware.

Strath Haven won the 4 x 800 (9:18.93) and was second in the distance medley relay. Penn Wood came from behind to beat Central in the 4 x 200.

Boys Hockey

Matt Dougherty set the tone with one goal and one assist in the first period to lead Penncrest to a 6-1 nonleague victory over Owen J. Roberts.

Dougherty scored the first goal and set up Sean Smolcynski to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Dougherty finished with three goals. Smolcynski tallied twice and Dan Mundy and Shane Kokoska chipped in with two assists each.

Girls Hockey

Maeve Hiehle tallied a pair of goals in the second half to break a tie and lead Penncrest-Haven to a 4-1 triumph over Downingtow­n East.

Hiehle broke a 1-1 deadlock 7:47 into the second period off assists from Elanor Miller and Sarah Piechel. Hiehle converted a pass from Marjorie Keeley seven minutes late to make it 3-1. Peichel finished with one goal and one assist.
