Double dose of titles for Brandywine

Penn State-Brandywine has a lot of banner-raising in its future thanks to a historic Sunday.

Both the Delco Lions’ men’s and women’s basketball teams clinched PSUAC titles, the men earning their first championsh­ip in the program’s 49 seasons and the women winning for the second straight year.

The men topped Wilkes-Barre, 72-63. Donte Winfield scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, and Terrence Brown sealed the game with a 13-for16 performanc­e from the line. Brown paired 22 points with 10 rebounds as PSUB withstood an 18-0 Wilkes-Barre run and trailed by as many as 10 in the second half.

Ameer Staggs (Ridley) added 10 points and seven boards. Upper Darby grad James Fisher (nine points, eight rebounds) was also near a double-double.

First-year coach Ben Kay has led PSUB to a 19-7 record after the team won just six games last year and 20 games in the previous four seasons combined.

The women’s team is more used to the championsh­ip spotlight, winning its sixth crown and fourth in the last 12 years under coach Larry Johnson. Nikki Velez led the way with 20 points. Brandi James (Interboro) paired 12 points with nine rebounds. Kendra Stanford (six rebounds, five steals) and Chrissy Gledhill of Springfiel­d added eight points each.

In other women’s basketball: DREXEL 54, WILLIAM AND MARY 34 » Bailey Greenberg scored 12 points, and Kelsi Lodge paired 10 points with eight rebounds and four assists as Drexel won its 11th straight home game. Niki Metzel added nine points and six boards off the bench for the Dragons (20-6, 12-2 CAA). DEPAUL 71, VILLANOVA 66 » Kelly Jekot scored 17 points, but the Wildcats shot just 26.5 percent from the field (9-for-34) in the second half to fall to the Blue Demons.

Alex Louin scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished six assists. Mary Gedaka and Jannah Tucker supplied 12 points apiece for Nova (20-7, 10-6 Big East). CONNECTICU­T 106, TEMPLE 45 » Emani Mayo scored 17 points, but Temple (10-16, 2-11 AAC) had a rough day against the top-seeded and undefeated Huskies, who dished 31 assists on 41 made baskets and outrebound­ed the Owls, 4924. Six Huskies scored in double-figures, led by 27 points from Katie Lou Samuelson.
