100 Years Ago – 1918: Acute indigestio­n, it has been stated, caused the sudden death of an 18-year-old who died at her home at 509 Edgmont Ave., on Friday last. Chester Mayor Wesley S. McDowell received a postcard today from J.F. Staus, R.R.S., who is in the United States Navy. The card was mailed from Obama, Japan. Staus sent his regards to his friends in the city, and made it clear that war is all that Sherman said it was.

75 Years Ago – 1943: Police today were searching for a footpad who caused a young woman to fall down several stair of the porch of the rectory of the Church of the Immaculate Heart

of Mary, 1408 W. Second St., Chester, as he stole her handbag which contained funds which she had collected for the church. The footpad is believed by police to be the same man who recently has molested a number of other women in the West End area.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

Dry weather was blamed for about 150 small field and brush fires throughout Delaware County this weekend. County Fire Marshal William J. Myers said he would ask local police forces to start prosecutin­g persons who burn trash and leaves. Also, it was accounted that Ridley Creek State Park would be closed until the dry spell is broken.

25 Years Ago – 1993: A majority of Chester City Council said they will vote this morning to fund the Chester Redevelopm­ent Authority – which was set to close tomorrow – for up to another month. Republican­s Edward J. Zetusky and James Sharp, along with Democratic Mayor Barbara Bohannan-Sheppard, said they would vote to release a portion of the federal Urban Developmen­t Action Grant funds frozen last month by the mayor and Democrats Charles McLaughlin and Annette Burton. The mayor said she will make the switch because she wants the authority to continue its day-to-day operations until council can get a new entity up and running.

10 Years Ago – 2008: U.S. Rep. Joseph Sestak, D-7 of Edgmont, recently held a town hall meeting at the Darlington Fine Arts Center to announce postal service there might soon be changing for the better. Garnet Valley, which in 2006 became part of the 19061 ZIP code serving Marcus Hook, Boothwyn, Linwood, Ogden and Trainer, includes portions of Bethel and Concord townships. A lot of study has already gone into the creation of a new ZIP code there, and prompted attention of postal officials.
