Sarah Reid Batty (“Sally”)
Sarah Reid Batty (“Sally”), 95, of Media PA, died on February 8, 2018 in Princeton NJ.
Mrs. Batty was the daughter of Joseph and Edna Cooke Reid of Ardmore PA. In May, 1942, she married Walter S. Batty, of Hopedale MA, who was then an Ensign in the Navy, having volunteered for the Navy’s Officer Candidate School. She and her husband first lived, for about eight months, in Boothbay Harbor ME, while his minesweeper was being built at a local shipyard. They had been married for 46 years at the time of his death in 1988. Mrs. Batty, whose mother was a direct descendent of Francis Cooke, who had sailed to Plymouth Harbor on the Mayflower in 1620, was a member of the Pennsylvania Mayflower Society. She was also a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Ardmore and of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, for over 60 years.
She is survived by her son, Walter S. Batty, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Nancy Miller Batty of Swarthmore PA; her daughter, Sudie Reid-Coles; her granddaughter, Eleanor Sears and her husband Edmund Sears, MD of Portland ME; her grandson, Robert Butchenhart and his wife Sara Butchenhart of Los Angeles CA; five great-grandchildren, Max, Eli, and Will Sears, and Luke and Mia Reid Butchenhart; a nephew, Warren Reid of Sarasota FL, and two nieces, Heather Hynes of Framingham MA and Laurel Moss of Willington CT.
At Mrs. Batty’s request, there will be no service.
Donations may be made in her memory to The Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia PA 19130, as she was a student of Laura Leggett Barnes at the Barnes Arboretum in Merion for three years in the 1950s, or to The Mother Church, 210 Mass. Ave., Boston MA 02115, designating Monitor Operating Fund, as she was an ad rep for the Christian Science Monitor daily newspaper for over 35 years.
