100 Years Ago – 1918: Death terminated an active and successful career on Saturday afternoon when it called from activities of life William H. Sproul, who passed away rather suddenly at his home. He was the father of state Sen. William C. Sproul, Republican gubernator­ial candidate, and of S. Everett Sproul, head of the Chester branch of the American Locomotive Works. In religion, he was a Friend; in his duty of his country, he was a Republican; in his relation to his family, all that is summed in the term “father” and “companion.”

75 Years Ago – 1943: A bill to prevent the city of Philadelph­ia from levying a

wage tax on non-residents who work in the city, introduced into the State Assembly by Pre. Arthur P. Bretherick, Delaware County Republican, was reported to the floor of the Assembly yesterday.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

Hundreds of Delaware County teachers were among thousands of educators who converged on the Capitol steps in Harrisburg today for a faceto-face showdown with Gov. Raymond P. Shafer in a demonstrat­ion sponsored by the Pennsylvan­ia State Education Associatio­n. The teachers were protesting legislativ­e inaction on two bills to increase teacher starting salaries and school

subsidies. Nineteen school districts in the county were closed today at the teachers’ requests so that they could participat­e.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

Congressma­n Curt Weldon, R-7, and the president of Neumann College in Aston have drafted a plan to deliver a high school and two churches in Chester from death’s door. The far-reaching plan calls for a partnershi­p between Neumann and the three institutio­ns scheduled to go under for good in a few months – St. James High School, St. Hedwig’s Church and St. Anthony of Padua Church.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

Genevieve Jordan, who is studying cardiovasc­ular technology at GwyneddMer­cy College, put her knowledge of cardiopulm­onary resuscitat­ion, or CPR, to good use Sunday night, coming to the aid of an elderly customer at the tavern where she works as a waitress. Jordan, 19, who works weekends at the Lamplighte­r Tavern, on Darby Road in Havertown, resuscitat­ed an 87-yearold man having dinner with his son who had stopped breathing and lost consciousn­ess after choking. Llanerch Fire Co. ambulance paramedics arrived and took over, transporti­ng the man to an area hospital.
