Quarter Mania back at Interboro

PROSPECT PARK » Interboro High School After Prom hosts its annual Quarter Mania Auction at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 10, in the high school cafeteria. A Quarter Mania Auction is a cross between an auction and a raffle where people “bid” to win a prize donated from various home business vendors participating in the event.

Bids on these items are from one to four quarters. There are five rounds of vendor items per round, with over 50 items auctioned off during the event. Vendors that have already confirmed participation are: LuLaRoe, Premier Designs Jewelry, Senegence/ Lipsense, Tastefully Simple, Thirty-One Bags, Tupperware, Young Living, Celebrating Home, Paparazzi, Party Lite Candles, and P!Phany.

Admission fee is $5 per guest and includes a paddle with a number on it that is used for individual bidding on the items to try to win. Corresponding numbered chips are added into the drawing bin to be used once the auction rounds begin.

As each item is offered up for bid, guests will bid the number of quarters designated by the Auctioneer for the item and hold up their paddle. Once all bids are in, a chip is then drawn. If the number on the chip matches someone who has bid, they’ve won the item. If not, chips are continued to be drawn until one matches a bidding paddle.

Refreshments are available for purchase. There is be a 50-50 drawing at the end of the evening. For information, email ihsafterprom@hotmail.com

Get help with lead paint

MEDIA » Community Action Agency of Delaware County, Inc. (CAADC) is now accepting applications for the Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Program. In this program, qualifying families who have a child age 5 or under may qualify for new windows and other repairs to help remediate lead paint hazards. Once an application is received, CAADC staff meets with the applicant to explain the program in detail and discuss the hazard of leadbased paint in the home.

Next, a lead audit is performed by a licensed firm. A report is prepared showing where lead paint exists in the home. CAADC then prepares a scope of work detailing the steps that will be taken to remove or reduce the lead to acceptable levels. This may include replacing doors and windows, installing new drywall, replacing trim and moldings, etc. When the renovations are complete, another lead audit is performed to be sure that all lead has been removed or reduced to acceptable levels. A copy of the final report, along with educational materials relating to lead hazards, is then given to the family.

To qualify, applicants must: Meet certain income guidelines; have a child age 5 or under at the time of application; be a homeowner (renters are not eligible at this time); and Be a resident of Delaware County (not all communities are eligible).

For information or to receive an application, e-mail Debbie Brodeur at dbrodeur@caadc.org. This program is funded by the Delaware County Office of Housing and Community Development and the Lawrence County Community Action Partnership.

Mickey Vernon centennial underway

RADNOR » The Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum announces a yearlong celebration to honor the birth of James Barton (Mickey) Vernon in 2018.

With apologies to other great players of local origin. it can be readily argued that Mickey is certainly the greatest baseball player that Delaware County has ever produced. Born on April 22, 1918, and a native of Marcus Hook, Vernon was a two-time American League batting champion and seven-time All-Star.

During 2018, the SLDC website presents a video clip and sports card each month throughout the year to commemorate the centennial. Called “Celebrating a Life Well-Lived,” the clips consist of a series of 12 interview segments in which Mickey reminisces about his years in baseball. Many of the segments were filmed just nine days before his death on Sept. 24, 2008.

The interview segments are compiled on a DVD “Grand Memories of a Great Champion.” For information on the exhibit and purchasing the DVD, contact Jim Vankoski at 610-9094919 or vankoski21@comcast.net.
