Final week to enter Young Poets Competition for county students
For the 29th year, the Young Poets Competition is accepting entries from Delaware County students in grades 1-12. Deadline for entries is Friday, March 24, 2018. Students may submit one poem to any public library in Delaware County. Poems are judged by grade level. The following information should appear on each poem: The student’s name, grade, school, home address, email address and phone number (winners are notified by phone and mail). Entries without all information are disqualified and entries are not returned.
Prizes include cash, and all first, second and third prize winners are published in a booklet featuring the winning poems.
The Young Poets Competition culminates in a special winners’ award event at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 6, featuring the 36 winners of the poetry competition who read their winning poems at the Redwood Community Playhouse on Sixth Street in Upland.
The contest is sponsored by several organizations including the Mad Poets Society, Delaware County Library System, Rose Tree Optimists Club, Pennsylvania Poetry Society, Delaware County Reading Council and the PA Council on the Arts.

The documentary “Gold Mettle” shows that Special Olympics is about more than sports, it is also about camaraderie, self-esteem, teamwork, following direction, overcoming challenges, physical fitness and more.
Interested volunteers and athletes are invited to sign up during the event. No experience is necessary. Volunteer opportunities include: Coaches, chaperones, managers, fundraisers, technical assistants, public relations specialists, event and outreach coordinators, facility coordinators and more.
Coaches are needed in all sports: Golf, tennis, basketball, soccer, swimming, track and field, bocce, softball, volleyball, floor hockey and power lifting. Each sport typically involves weekly training sessions through the season with two or three weekend competitions.
For interested athletes, Special Olympics is open to all athletes age 8 and older in addition to a Young Athletes Program for children 3 and older.
