Koster’s single completes comeback for Sun Valley

Sun Valley watched ChesMont League American Division rival Great Valley jump out to a four-run lead, then stormed back for a 5-4 win in eight innings Wednesday afternoon.

The winning run scored for the Vanguards (1-0) in the top of the eighth inning when Ryan Koster roped an RBI single to left, scoring Jared Korenweicz, to complete the comeback. Korenweicz led off the inning with a double and was sacrificed to third by Vinny DeAngelo.

DeAngelo came on in relief for Sun Valley, down 4-0, and threw 3⅓ innings of shutout ball to pick up the win. DeAngelo allowed the Patriots (0-1) just three hits while striking out three in closing the door.

In nonleague games: HAVERFORD SCHOOL 7, GARNET VALLEY 6 » Zak Summy was the walk-off hero for the Fords. He belted a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Fords a dramatic victory.

John McLaughlin’s solo homer put the visiting Jaguars ahead in the top of the eighth, shortly after Haverford School forced extra innings thanks to Justin Meyer’s two-run dinger in the seventh. McLaughlin finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Jags (0-2). HAVERFORD SCHOOL 12, LOWER MERION 2 » Meyer blasted a three-run homer in the first inning in Game 2 of a doublehead­er for Haverford. Pat Toal allowed only one hit and struck out five in four innings, and added two hits and two RBIs. Nick Holtz chipped in with two base knocks for the Fords (5-0). WESTTOWN SCHOOL 8, EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 7 » The Churchmen almost deleted an 8-0 fourth-inning deficit but came up short. Brian Virbitsky doubled, walked and scored two runs for the Churchmen, who committed four errors. Will Park and Will Kelley added two base knocks each and Mitch Pagano walked three times.

In the Del Val League: CHICHESTER 19, GLEN MILLS 0 » Andrew Rodriguez fired a three-inning no-hitter with five Ks, doubled and drove in three runs. Zach Taylor was 2-for-2 with a double and four ribbies, Anthony Caramanico doubled and knocked in two runs, and Marcus Williams finished 2-for-2 with a two-bagger.

Softball

Ridley sisters Morgan and Madison Chapman combined on a no-hitter in a 15-0 rout of Chichester.

Madison, a freshman, went 4-for-5 at the plate with a homer and three runs scored. Gab DiNardo reached base four times, going 3-for-3 with three runs for the Green Raiders.

In the Ches-Mont League: SUN VALLEY 13, GREAT VALLEY3» The Vanguards (1-1) exploded for 10 runs in the first inning on the way to giving new coach Shawn Potter his first varsity win.

Madison Gutowiecz was the winning pitcher and helped her cause with two hits, including a double, two RBIs and two runs. Madison Koons added a double and three RBIs.

Girls Lacrosse

Freshman Kylie Gioia made her presence felt for Marple Newtown Thursday. She scored four goals and dished out two assists as the Tigers jumped out to a big lead against Cardinal O’Hara and held on for a 16-14 season-opening victory.

Kaeley Cristello led the Tigers with five goals and an assist. Shannon McCarthy registered a hat trick and Paige Kostack added two goals and two helpers.

O’Hara chipped away at an eight-goal deficit and made things interestin­g late in regulation. Anna DeRita paced the Lions with five goals and Erin Grady had a pair of tallies.

In other nonleague action: PENNCREST 16, SOUDERTON 4 » Carly Baillis powered the Lions to a second straight win with four goals and Kenna Kaut chipped in with three goals and two assists. STRATH HAVEN 11, BISHOP SHANAHAN 7 » Sophie Haase had five goals and Margot Hotham, Emily Raech and Gillian Brennan each netted two for the Panthers, who led 9-1 at halftime. Katie Capalbo finished with six saves. SPRINGFIEL­D 8, CARDINAL GIBBONS (N.C.) 7 » Sophomore goalie Aidan Gallagher made several outstandin­g saves late in regulation to preserve the win for the Cougars.

Olivia Little registered two goals and four assists while Dana Carlson tallied three goals for Springfiel­d (2-0). NORTH PENN 21, INTERBORO 2» Morgan Reed accounted for both Interboro goals.

Boys Lacrosse

Tim Fitzgerald recorded scored five goals and Ryan Clauder made 10 saves as Devon Prep/Delco Christian earned an 8-6 nonleague win over Oxford.

Ethan Gillin tossed in a pair of goals, while Luke Gutowski and Cole Hines excelled on defense for DP/DC.
