100 Years Ago – 1918:

The members of the Hon. William C. Sproul Club desire the Times to make it plain to the people of Chester that the big rally and banner raising on Thursday night of this week at Seventh and Edgmont Avenue is their affair. It is no partisan gathering of politician­s, but of all people who favor the candidacy of Sproul for governor.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

The old automobile abandoned two years ago in the rear of 1100 W. Third St., Chester, yesterday afternoon gave up a grim secret and thereby solved a three-weeks’ old mystery. Boys playing around the old brokendown vehicle resting on its axles discovered the boy of a dead man. From papers in the man’s pockets the boy was identified as that of a 59-year-old who had lived alone for some years on Second Street. Among the papers City Detective Bernard Dougherty found a receipted bill for the burial expense of his father, paid by his mother, 19 years ago. A postmortem made by Dr. Vincent Nacrelli, coroner’s physician, indicated the man had been dead for about three weeks and no found no signs of foul play.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, DN.Y., will arrive in Delaware County today and will follow a 12-mile motorcade route, making one stop in Darby, two in Ridley Township, one in Upper Darby, and one in Springfiel­d. Interest in Kennedy’s visit – part of his campaign for the Democratic presidenti­al nomination – has been heightened by President Lyndon B. John’s announceme­nt yesterday that he will not seek re-nomination. The announceme­nt caused shock and surprise among county Democratic leaders, as they had endorsed Johnson.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

Many Delaware County high schools are starting a new tradition by hosting elaborate, alcohol-free post-prom parties. “The whole idea to give them an alternativ­e activity to drugs and alcohol on prom night that’s fun, that’s safe, and that they’ll remember,” said parent Sue Hauer, who is coordinati­ng Sun Valley High School’s first postprom party this year.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

A routine traffic stop for speeding turned into a melee between police and the passenger who violently resisted arrest, according to Upper Darby police. A 2000 Chevy Impala was pulled over 4 p.m. March 13 on the 300 block of Beverly Boulevard, within 1,000 feet of Beverly Hills Middle School. A 19-year-old passenger allegedly put up a fight.
