100 Years Ago – 1918: Members of the U.S. Infantry, 50th Regiment, displayed fine form this morning in their regular exercises, which anyone can see every day on the athletic field of the Sun Shipbuildi­ng Co. in Chester. From the United Press wire: The Germans are again disputing the mastery of the air. Their greatest aviator, Richtofen, has reappeared and is commanding a powerful squadron of airplanes.

75 Years Ago – 1943: The fascinatin­g “diorama” of an American Ranger raid on a Japanese-held air field, which has been viewed by more than 10,000 persons since it was completed by American Viscose Corp. employees, in now on display at Stern and Co.’s store, where it is stopping crowds at Fifth Street and Edgmont Avenue, Chester.

50 Years Ago – 1968: U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, D-N.Y., stormed through Delaware County Monday night, asking voters’ help to “turn this country around” and find the path to peace in Vietnam. An estimated 15,000 county residents turned out to see the brother the late President John F. Kennedy in the midst of a heated campaign for the Democratic nomination for president. Kennedy’s reception here was – for the most part – warm, although at the Broomall Restaurant in Ridley Township some young bystanders threw eggs at him and his wife, Ethel, as Kennedy addressed the crowd.

25 Years Ago – 1993: A police dog helped police ban a man who broke into the Upland Baptist Church early yesterday. The man, in his early 30s and of no known address, was arrested about 4:30 a.m. hiding inside the balcony of the church at Main and Third streets. Brookhaven K9 Officer Drew Timlin with his dog Saber located the man. A 29-year-old Broomall woman was charged with 26 counts of theft by unlawful taking in the theft and use of MAC cards. The 26 MAC machine withdraws on three dates totaled $2,650. The limit for the automatic teller machines withdrawal­s is $200 within a 24-hour period.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

With Regency Café coffee in their hands and a Mission Burrito-catered lunch awaiting, about two dozen government­al officials from across the country learned a major key to Lansdowne’s economic revitaliza­tion efforts is arts and culture. The visitors listened to a panel discussion about what is working for the Delaware County borough.
