100 Years Ago – 1918:
From every indication the people will turn out in large numbers tonight to greet Sen. William C. Sproul, Republican candidate for governor, and to listen to the distinguished speakers placing his candidacy properly before the people. Former Gov. Edwin S. Stuart comes to Chester, no stranger to many of our people, and his presence should bring out a large number. Mayor W.S. McDowell, while not enjoying the best health, will be present to aid in giving to Sen. Sproul a rousing send-off.
75 Years Ago – 1943:
One Chester fireman was injured yesterday while fighting a fire which destroyed a one-story building in the central yard of the Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., causing damage estimated at $30,000. The injured fireman was George Murphy, of the Hanley hose Co., who received a dislocated knee. He was treated at the Sun dispensary.
50 Years Ago – 1968:
The Delaware County School Board unanimously approved Wednesday night a $1,380,330 budget representing first-year operating costs for the county’s proposed vocational-technical high school program. The board said will send the budget to the 32 county school districts participating in the program and supporting it with local taxes.
25 Years Ago – 1993:
Students at Northley Middle School in Aston are networking with peers around the globe using a computer, modem and an AT&T program. The ”Classroom Connections” programs allows geographically and culturally diverse students to share information, said Bud Finocchiaro, Penn-Delco School District’s social studies coordinator. It is being used in teacher Dan Recchiuti’s seventh-grade World Cultures class, where students can automatically send and receive toll-free messages that are stored in an electronic mailbox.
10 Years Ago – 2008:
A 32-year-old McCay Avenue man wearing only his skivvies allegedly used five-pound cement squirrel as a weapon against Upper Chichester police during a cocaine-fueled rampage that took place around 9:23 a.m. Monday. Police were initially dispatched for a medical emergency when a caller said someone had overdosed on cocaine and was running in her yard wearing only underwear. Minutes later, a second call was placed, this time by the next-door neighbor. She told police a man wearing only underwear had broken into her home and was destroying property.
